Re: The ugab river

Re: The ugab river
Doom. I know, that is another issue. All the rain fall we have received this year(im not complaining, was really a blessing) is really messing up my 4x4 holidays haha.
I have done the Omaruru-Henties rout 4 times now and love it. I was going to tackle it again last month but as you say -Way to wet-.
What time of year ,do you think, it will be fully ok to travel through???(the ugab that is)

Re: The ugab river

Re: The ugab river
Hi Bruno,
Do you mean the T4A route going through the Ugab?
This is one of my favorite places.
We normally get in from the Uis side - enter the Ugab just before Brandberg. We then exit at the Ugab Rhino Camp. I don't think you can continue with the river much further down from the Rino camp.
We saw desert elephants on both trips we did in the Ugab. The last time (last year June) we went to Doros crater as well. Not much to see at Doros, it is pretty much desert, except for a nice view (Always a treat to go with my father though, he has all kinds of facts on the small plants - kannie-doods, etc of that area). On our way to Doros crater, my wife spotted a cheetah - honestly, have some bad quality photos to show. It was a real blessing to see the cheetah - it was around sunset...
Have to warn you though, both times were done in a drier season - and the last time we almost had problems with a marsh area (is this the correct word, Afrikaans - moeras?). The area is well indicated on T4A. You can avoid this area, by taking a route on the Brandberg bank - it is quite rocky, so watch out for your wheels.
I have heard of guys losing vehicles in other rivers of Namibia, due to flash floods - this might also happen in the Ugab.
Just remembered, we did enter the Ugab on the other side of Uis, then exited near Khorixas - Outjo. Also saw ellies on this trip - my wife is not so keen on them ;) ... But the lower Ugab is much more interesting - especially if you are looking for birds, ellies and giraffes, Kudu and Gemsbok, and scorpions. It is not much of a 4x4 challenge - basically thick sand and some mud - but it will always remain one of my favourite places, when I want to get rid of all the stress and muck of Johannesburg.
O, forgot to mention, we normally set up bush camps in the Ugab. You can stay over at Rhino camp - we never had the chance to do that - maybe next time - in order for my wife to take a shower. Don't know the rates for the Rhino camp. There is another camp near the White lady - but that might be expensive - I don't know.
Last time we considered going from Ugab to Huab, but this didn't realize.
We try to not make camp near any waterholes when we are in Damaraland - The rhino calves might need to come and drink during the night, and either adults will break your camp, or they might avoid the waterhole - with dire consequences for the calves.

Re: The ugab river
Hi there,
Sorry, I used my father-in-law's GPS, and I didn't save the coordinates. Also, my father was self-appointed navigator so he told us where to turn...
I will look on the T4A map though, and see if I can reconstruct our route. Will give the coords (estimates) and pictures a bit later.
Kind Regards,
Jaco

Re: The ugab river

Die Ugab sal seker nog te nat wees, maar gaan kyk en vind uit. As dit nat is moet daar ten minste 3 karre wees met winches en highlift jacks anders gaan julle nie ver kom nie. , vra maar vir Kattie memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4586" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
