2 way radios in Namibia & Botwana.
I did find some old posts here detailing the application procedures. Does anyone have recent info regarding applying for a visitor's radio permit?

Hi Steve, I tried obtaining info for radio permits last year, and after a number of emails to various people it never happened......
This person 'Emilia' enamwoonde @ cran.na mailed me yesterday asking if I was assisted. Perhaps you can give her a try :wink2:

Re: 2 way radios in Namibia & Botwana.
I received a prompt rely & was given this form to fill in. http://www.cran.na/downloads/forms/A/47 ... rm%20C.PDF" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thought it was a little 'over the top' for a temporary visitors permit so queried this with her again & this was the reply;
"Dear Sir
Yes the form is generic for all spectrum users.
Best regards
Emilia"

Thanks Roy,
Interested to know what info you gave them for things like mast height, co-ordinates & circumference?
Did you get the permit & what was the cost?

Re: 2 way radios in Namibia & Botwana.
Most of that is unnecessary.
You must state you need a GUEST LICENCE for the period for which you are in Nam, state the VHF frequencies (ORRA 1 or 2), ask them for any of the two that might be available, but do not ask for both.
Deviation is 12.5kHz, make & model is, for e.g. "Kirisun PT8100" (not sure that is valid for Nam, otherwise use Kenwood TK7102.
For approval certificate, use the ICASA certificate number on radio as well as on box.
Power output is 25 watts, antenna is Zara60 quarterwave, intended use is for communications between two (or more) vehicles while travelling for safety reasons.
Fixed db loss is '0dB'.
Transmission mode is Terrestrial.
Geographic area is for Mobile use along your (stated) route, and range required is some 5 - 8km maximum.
Modulation scheme is F3.
Receiver Threshold sensitivity is 0,4uV.
That should be all they require, if not let me know and we'll take it further. It would be to your possible advantage to include a short 3 - 4 paragraph letter stating you wish to tour their wonderful country and you are proud to have the opportunity to do so. The use of radio communications is to ensure safety and well-being of all the vehicles in your group (remember, they will also have to apply for this) in case of mechanical breakdown or other emergency (sick baby etc) at a lonely spot, road conditions, animal sighting etc as well as for a more memorable experience .

Appreciate the info Eric. Will they know "ORRA" or should I state the actual ferquncies? I'll let you know if I'm successful.

Re: 2 way radios in Namibia & Botwana.
You need to state the frequencies. You'll have to PM me for these, I do not want to make this public knowledge.
This is actually contrary to ORRA's rulings, we will have to address this at the next ORRA meeting.

Re: 2 way radios in Namibia & Botwana.
I completed as much as I could... so there were a lot of blank places.
I also didn't give the full frequency with the decimal point - just the 152Mhz (or whatever it is - can't remember / or find the right one now.)
I think the phrase: ignorance is bliss, comes to mind.
But they seemed happy enough to give me a 6 month licence.

Re: 2 way radios in Namibia & Botwana.
Interesting point. Give it a bash, if they complain you could always submit the exact frequency later. The 152.xxx is the old ORRA frequency which will start to fall away now, so it will be a good starting point.
