I got a quote from Midas in East London R970 all four (R480 back/R490 front) but this was for standard suspension. As mentioned earlier in this thread I to am wondering what shocks will fit with Ironman springs :?:
A few people have suggested LC shocks so Im going to be giving that a try soon but I think they are quite a bit more expensive than the Hilux shocks :(

Aahh.. .so the shocks they quoted you on were standard shocks. I'm speaking under correction but I faintly remembering someone say it would be in the region of about R600 a shock for the LC ones...

I think you are quite rite in fact I think its even a little more than that
In which case I might as well just fit the Ironman shocks at R730 each and know for sure that they are a perfect fit :|
Im also going to have a look at Gabrial Safari they are alot cheaper (I think less than half) and they also come with a longer garuntee 4yrs as apposed to 3.

I've got the Gabriels at the moment. Although I cannot say that I had any bad experiences with them, I've heard that they are not the best. IT is for this reason that I want to try something else (like Monroe or so) to see if there is any truth in the story.

Since the Gabriel Safari's changed from an oil only to a gas shock it seems like their quality took a knock. I spoke to quite a few guys even at one or two suspension places when I did research before fitting the raised suspension on the Pajero, and more than one place mentioned that they stopped fitting it due to all the comebacks and warranty claims

I now remember where I heard about the Safari's not being up to standard. :)

I was looking at the Ranchos on http://72.34.32.141/~snakerac/index.php ... ebf62919a4 and is very tempted to spoil Bloudraad and fit him a kit which is adjustable on the go

Well on the Pajero I had the Ironman's replaced after 6 months ( less than 20 000kms) under warranty of course.

I must say the service was very well, no quarrels or questions asked Christo from Ironman came out to Safari Centre checked out my vehicle I left there for the day and when I got it back they replaced 4 shocks and 2 coils. I hope this time it lasts longer.

For Hiluxes, Ironman also has the foam cell shocks which I heard is very good. So it comes down to price I guess. If I only had to fit shocks to the Pajero I guess I would have gone for the Monroe Adventures, but the Ironman was a complete kit of 4 coils and shocks and the price at the time was quite competitive compared to getting Monroe shocks and extended coils loose. At the time the availability of Monroes on the Pajero was also an issue.

The Rancho range of shocks (now also sold under the Monroe brand name if I am not mistaking) is also a good option to consider. although more expensive the guys on the overseas forums rave about them. They also have a model that is adjustable with a controller inside the cab. But I guess that will costaplenty :? :? But for all you rich okies money should not be a problem.

Hi Guys
I am the Product Manager for Monroe & Rancho products in South Africa so perhaps I can shed a bit more light on this subject.
Currently we sell three types of shocks (not all may be available for each model), they are:

Monroe Gas Magnum: Shocks only (no kits), and some extended ones are available. These are std preassure gas heavy duty twin-tube shocks. Many of these are now manufactured locally and are generally very price competitive.

Monroe Adventure: Shocks only (no kits). These are high preassure gas heavy duty
mainly mono-tube shocks. All are imported and generally more expensive than the Gas-Magnums.

Rancho: Shocks and full kits. These shocks are tri-tube, cellular gas and are 9-way adjustable (you can also get a remote in-cab control). The Rancho RS9000XL shocks are also much thicker with more oil for cooling than most of the other brands. Remember that even gas shocks have oil in them as well.
Many of the shocks are generally available ex stock in SA, but the kits are brought in under special request - normally via LA Sport

Shocks for all three are available through any of the franchise groups ie Midas, AutoZone, Mikar, Supa Quick, Speedy, Hi-Q, Autoquip & Kwik-Fit.

Unfortunatly as we do not sell directly to the public I can only quote you on recomended retail pricing but most outlets will sell to you less up to about 50% discount. So you should be able to get about halve the prices quoted below, which are per shock ex vat or fitment

(Simon) 1990 Hi-Lux std ht
Front : M5454 (Gas-Magnum) = R484. D8454 (Adventure) = R1220. No Rancho listed at this point.
Rear : M4445 (Gas-Magnum) = R490. D4445 (Adventure) = R1212. No Rancho listed at this point.

(Cassie) 1994 Hi-Lux raised 50mm
Unfortunatly for this model we only list for a raise of about 20 to 30mm. No Kits.

Although you can use our longer shocks with other makes of springs and kits it is generally recomended that the spring rates be similar to the original spec or they may not work very well together - matched shocks and springs are always best. The Monroe shocks are designed around the std original suspension and spring spec. Although our Australian factory makes many of the Old man Emu shocks for them, we do not carry the same in the Monroe range.

Finally regarding the warranty, Gabriel Safari's have a 3 year warranty (not 4), the same as Monroe Gas-Magnum and Adventure shocks. The Ranchos have a 2 year warranty due to the fact that they are often used for competitive off-road racing.

Hope this helps...

Thanks Philip

Can you please explain the difference between the twin-tube and mono tube designs of the magnum and adventure models. What is the benefits of the one design over the other?

Is their specific applications that will cause someone to rather use the one over the other?

For overlanding i.e carrying heavy loads (even towing) over long distances through Africa on mostly gravel or bad roads which shock would you recommend?

Also for trail driving where one would need extreme articulation and comfort which one would you recommend there?

No Problem

Twin-Tube
In brief most normal shocks are twin tube std preassure units which in effect is a tube within a tube having the piston and rod of the shock working within the inner tube. The oil and gas is mixed so aeration can affect the settings as the temp rises. The design cost on these is lower which makes them more affordable, you can also normally get better articulation with them. Due to the twin tubes if they are slightly dented over rocky ground they can continue to function.
Tri-Tube
Tri-tube (Rancho) designs are much the same as above except there is a third cylinder around the outer cylinder which makes them even more robust. The Rancho's often use a cellular gas technology which separates the oil and gas (similar in some ways to foam cel) preventing the two from mixing and reducing the effects of fade (loss of settings / going soft) during tough going. The Rancho also gives you the ability to dial in the ride you want without taking the shocks off (in same cases, from the comfort of your seat).
Mono-Tube
Uses a single cylinder and high preassure gas, but in this case the oil and gas are kept separate via a floating piston underneath the std piston and rod. These are faster reacting due to the high preasure gas and run cooler due to the single cylinder (reducing fade), but are expensive to make and if they are dented can stop working so are not ideal for very rocky / stoney terrain. They also have reduced articulation (lengths) in many cases due to the addition of the internal floating piston.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback Philip.

On the snakeracing website I see one can by Rancho Shocks separate and you can specify the amount of lift you have on the suspension. For my 50mm lift I was thinking a 2" lift shock will do. Then you kan also buy them in the kit form with the controller unit for inside the cab (I think the price us Aus$495) and the shocks Aus$195.

Cassie

Check out the main Rancho website on http://www.gorancho.com and try to give me a part number(s) that you are interested in. I have also attached some info on the Rancho Pro-Series coil over units that can be ordered according to lift and weight, but are generally designed for the lighter "tube" off-roaders.

You can also check out http://www.monroe.co.za for more info and links to our overseas sites. By the way, if anyone is interested there is a competition that you can enter (closes off 31 May) where you could win a set of Monroe off-road shocks for your vehicle.
