Donkerkloof Carnage 3rd Crusade
This coming weekend will be the 3rd installment of the Donkerkloof thrash fest!
Dates: 25-26 February 2012
Where:
- 54 km South East from Polokwane on the R37 Burgersfort Road.
- 290 km from Pretoria via Zebediela.
Coordinates to turn-off: S24 16.038 E29 37.542
Contact: Ronald Hairbottle 082 376 5378 t.a.c@mweb.co.za
Itinerary:
- Meet at turn-off on Sat 25 Feb @ 06:00 sharp!
- Wheel until reach end of kloof - 17:00 ... ? Depends on carnage levels!
- Pitch camp in kloof riverbed - no facilities - awesome!
- Kuier till late, braai, lick wounds, bush repairs, general mayhem...
- Return back to turn-off via Stylkop - awesome views - and if time permits, a saunter into the cave of all caves - we haven't found the end of this one yet, had to turn around previously due to lack of oxygen so deep in!
Vehicle prep:
- Lockers front & rear preferable, otherwise you will have to be winched or towed over certain sections.
- Good clearance
- Bash plates, Sliders, Diff guards - No rock magnets! Tupperware beware!
- Lower gearing a great help
- Winch will help, although others will be on hand to help
- Own recovery gear
- Travel as light as possible
- Low tire pressures 0.8 to as low as 0.1 bar
- Bring your spares & spanners!
- Ensure your truck is mechanically sound
What to expect:
- Rocks, water, rocks, sand, rocks, repeat.
- Technical driving all the way
- Awesome scenery!
- Rock rash on diffs, sliders, undercarriage, bumpers etc. If careful, body damage can be avoided, or minimized...
- New and old friendships cemented for life
Some pics to whet the appetites...

Great pics! Looks like you 'barber-poled' that front prop properly!
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Awesome pics. Daai Surf kan maar, net soos Ronald, as iemand diff-locks soek of wil weet van suspensies, vra vir Ronald hy weet nogal waarvan hy praat.

Re: Donkerkloof Carnage 3rd Crusade
Andy,
Yes, we build these toys for a living. The 4Runner I've had since 1996 (1991 model). It has almost 500 000 km on the clock and still just drives better by the day.
The suspension is our own design, by incorporating various different components to work in unison. The front shocks are Fox Racing remote reservoir shocks with 12" travel, specially valved for the Hilux. The rears are OME with a certain valving which works great in the rear.
The Formula Toy is the first one built in RSA and the suspension setup is identical to mine, except that the rear springs has all the overloads removed and some other leaves added to get the spring rate right. Shocks are specially selected OME units with 13" travel all round.
We are busy with a 1992 Hilux at present, which is set up like these two, but also fully street legal with standard body. This one is going to be the baddest Hilux in RSA! We have done over R200 000.00 of work on mainly traction on this one! Keep your eyes peeled for a build thread on both the Formula Toy and the Hilux soon.
Haven't been to the Molotots, or maybe have been? Whereabouts?
