IFS Suspension Upgrade Old Man Emu

Post by 4x4Maniac »

So ek begin more middag met die Torsions...

Oldman EMU Nitrogas sport R18400 installasie (10% afslag)
Mikem R18500 met installasie

Wat is julle opinies? Miskien maak ek nou n blik wurms oop?

Een ding is verseker: binnekort adverteer ek 2de handse Torsions, leave springs en shocks (dis nou as iemand 2de handse shocks wil he...

Weet iemand of die OME shocks langer/korter is as due Bullsteins?

Sag of medium?

Medium load: Canopy alleenlik

Sag = meer sway Hard = minder sway as jy gelaai is.
Onglukkig kan mens nie 'best of both worlds he nie'. Sou nice wees maar dis 'n 4x4 :wink2:

Meeste van jou gemaks rit kom van voor (vir die drywer) so sag / medium voor klink vir my sal jou dalk beter pas.

Another thing.

Important: have a good look around, ask many questions like you are doing now and sure you are doing that. It's a lot of dosh to spend on your truck.

I would rather spend R4K on Gabriel shocks than RXX on aftermarket cjinese stuff :!:

Have to agree with Mark  What I also like about Mikem that it is double wrapped at the leaf springs

Is Gabriel Safaris.

My huidige torsions is klaar op gestel.

Wonder nou waar is die OME biased ouens...:mrgreen:

Sorry, your other question was about extended shackles.

I went this route, as with my Heavy Duty blades rear after my van was loaded (I mean heavily loaded) somewhere in the region of 800kg's  My van was hanging a bit.

So fitted the extended shackles (greasable) gained unloaded 35mm at the back and 10mm front. Now when the van is loaded she can like to be level

Pic loaded before extended shackles:

Note: No difference with ride or stability of vehicle what so ever :!:

What I would like to add is, try and find a contact of an importer.....and then you will really know how much these aftermarket suspensions are really costing the retailer.......

PM me and I will tell you, before I get killed

Note: After market suspensions are better than the standard.

But, I do not believe for one moment the cost they are ripping the 4x4 community off justifies it by a mile :wink2:

As a newcomer to 4x4 cost-to-kit-out I am learning that there is a lot of DIY that can be done to get a bit more out of a small budget! Perhaps we should have a new section for suppliers into the 4x4 aftermarket arena that do not rip the proverbial bottom out of "it" :acute:

Want Mikems is maar net so duur...

Ok cool, so here are my (I mean my bakkie's measurements)

I currently have standard IFS suspension with slightly lifted Torsions. An ARB Bullbar and winch, with an under carriage Intercooler and bashplate. So all this is a lot of weight in the front. I also put 31' BFG's with 15" rims (standard) and the wheels are currently catching the bodywork on some axle twisters.

Measurement taken from:
1. Ground to bottom of wheel arch.
2. Bottom of rim to bottom of wheel arch.
3. Middle of hubcap to bottom of wheel arch.
4. Top of rim to bottom of wheel arch.

Front Passenger side Front Driver side
1. 88cm 88.5cm
2. 72.5cm 73cm
3. 52.5cm 53cm
4. 32cm 32.5cm

Back Passenger side Back Driver side
1. 90.5cm 90cm
2. 75cm 74.5cm
3. 54.5cm 54cm
4. 34cm 33.5cm

Meet Kameleon,

It is a 1999 IFS Hilux SRX, basic 4x4 no Locker. I 1st saw this one as it entered 4x4 Megaworld in Pretoria to have a Roofrack fitted to the Canopy and a Rooftop tent in 2004. This was one of 5 Bakkies that a German bought to use Exclusivly for renting out to Foreigners.

It had roughly 38 000kms on, his business was already ongoing and most of the Bakkies was all over Africa, this perticular one just came back from Namibia. Over the next 4 years it was in and out as any Rental Bakkie, maintanance usually was engine services, tyres and a odd wishbone that was bend or a light that had to replaced. In 2008 we fitted the ARB bumper, it was heading to Botswana. It came back after the Trip and it limped in with a rear Leafspring broken. It then had 90 000kms on. So we fitted the OME Suspension, Torsion in the front with the shocks, the rear was the constant 250kg springs, shocks and bushes, it had then the battery system, canopy, roofrack with high lift jack, spare wheel on the roofrack,Aux Tank, rooftop tent and a 40 lt Engel permanently in. After we had it it had to go for the 2nd clutch replacement and to have the front diff and axle replaced. After that it had to leave for Tanzania.

All went well on the trip, it came back and the centre bearing needed to be replaced, piping on the Aux tank had to be replaced, the petrol tank had to come out and the fuel pump was replaced. The spots had to be added. Then it was out again for a trip to Namibia(the bash plate took nice ding), Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe and back to SA. For 2 years I did not see it again, then in 2010 it was back, a Drawer System had to be installed, the extra weight made us to insert a 8th blade to counter for all the weight, the drawers were to handle food, recovery equipment and camping goods. The Gearbox also needed to be replaced. Then it were out again for its last long trip, Moz, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, through the Caprivi and back to SA through Botwana.

Unfortunatly the German had Family death in Germany as the Bakkie returned on its trip, he had no choice to sell the Bakkies as he had to return to Germany to handle this matter.

That is how this one landed with me, Kameleon is the slowest, thirsty 2.7lt but it drives the best of the rest, overall I knew the History of this one in perticular. It now has over 170 000km on it. Of the KMS done one can say 2/3 was on Gravel, dunes,4x4 driving and average good tar. I only had the Radiator replaced so far.

The OME, well it still in and giving good performance. :shh:

Louis, is Kameleon now your bakkie? Looks great and seems to be in excellent condition. 170k km is just nothing, the vehicle is barely run in!

(But as if I need to even tell you that... )

Wel persoonlik was ek mal oor my vorige SFA se Pro Comp suspention" behalwe die lift blocks agter"

Mikem en OME....
Dis 'n wrede keuse...

Ok, good news I've decided to take the plunge and have started with the installation of the OME Torsions...

Wow!
What can I say! Immediately, I can feel the difference... Feels like I'm driving a Merc, and that is just Torsions making a huge difference already.

Before, in order to test it we drove straight into a speed bump at +-20km/h and the previous torsions was already at max that the bump stops would hit against the chassis so much that you just hear a doef sound!

After. Drive at +- 40km/h, nothing nada! Its like it just absorbs the bump...

The lift I gained just by changing the Torsions: 3cm in the front, 0.5cm-1cm at the back.
Now the nose isnt hanging any more, the ride is much softer and less body roll...

Measurement taken from:
1. Ground to bottom of wheel arch.
2. Bottom of rim to bottom of wheel arch.
3. Middle of hubcap to bottom of wheel arch.
4. Top of rim to bottom of wheel arch.

Before
Front Passenger side Front Driver side
1. 88cm 88.5cm
2. 72.5cm 73cm
3. 52.5cm 53cm
4. 32cm 32.5cm

Back Passenger side Back Driver side
1. 90.5cm 90cm
2. 75cm 74.5cm
3. 54.5cm 54cm
4. 34cm 33.5cm

After
Front Passenger side Front Driver side
1. 91cm 91.5cm
2. 75.5cm 76cm
3. 55cm 55.5cm
4. 34cm 34.5cm

Back Passenger side Back Driver side
1. 91.5cm 91cm
2. 75.5cm 75cm
3. 55cm 54.5cm
4. 34.5cm 34cm

Now I really cannot wait for the OME rear leaf springs, boy what a difference that is also going to make.

I did not want to pick up the nose too much untill I have the rear also sorted... And believe me there is still plenty of spring left in those thicker spring steel torsions.

Thanks so much Louis@4x4Megaworld for your hard work in getting them installed, now to wait for September.

Oh yes before I forget to tell you guys...

Ive opted for the 400kg 8 blades at the back, but am removing the one blade so to have it ready when the canopy and RTT and everything else also goes on! In that way while the canopy isnt on I'll have a much better ride.

 Plesier Werner.

Baie dankie Louis, hy het 6 springs in so ek sal die extra blade moet laat insit. Het die oorspronklike een hier by 4x4 mega in die kaap laat insit so sal maar weer daar 'n draaitjie by die vriendelike ouens gaan maak voor ons Desember Kaokoland toe gaan. :yahoo:

Ok, so the new OME leaf springs are in... And another beeeg Wow!

Feels like a new truck...

I just couldnt wait any longer or to post the results, but it seems as the suspension has already settled in...

The total lift I gained by changing the Torsions and the Leaf springs: 6cm in the front, and a whopping 8cm at the back, and that is with 7 blades ie. the 200kg load springs. still have the extra blade that will go on once the canopy goes on, that is rated for a constant load of 400kg.

Modified today further as the bakkie wasn't quite level, so picked up the torsions a little bit more...

Measurement taken from:
1. Ground to bottom of wheel arch.
2. Bottom of rim to bottom of wheel arch.
3. Middle of hubcap to bottom of wheel arch.
4. Top of rim to bottom of wheel arch.

Before
Front Passenger side Front Driver side
1. 88cm 88.5cm
2. 72.5cm 73cm
3. 52.5cm 53cm
4. 32cm 32.5cm

Back Passenger side Back Driver side
1. 90.5cm 90cm
2. 75cm 74.5cm
3. 54.5cm 54cm
4. 34cm 33.5cm

After
Front Passenger side Front Driver side
1. 94cm 94.5cm
2. 78.5cm 79cm
3. 58cm 58.5cm
4. 37.5cm 38cm

Back Passenger side Back Driver side
1. 98.5cm 98cm
2. 83cm 82.5cm
3. 62.5cm 62cm
4. 42cm 41.5cm

So now there are 3 things left:

1. Got to re-do the wheel balancing and perhaps put in shims due to the caster being so out.
2. Put in longer shocks as the current Gabriel Safaris O currently have on are bottoming out.
3. Sell old Torsions and Leafs so I can pay for the shocks!

Thanks again Louis for a job well done! And for a lekka kuier as well! Hope to see you soon...

Adjusted torsions today again, because it wasn't quite level, so got an additional 2.5cm gain in the front and another 1cm at the rear...

Updated measurements in my previous post... Now it drives beautifully!

Haven't done some serious offroading yet, however do hear it bottoming out every now and then when going over a bump, whilst turning, so that the right front wheel goes first. The rear right (drivers side) shock never was the correct length shock... on the IFS the right rear shock is suppose to be longer, because of the difference in mounting points. If you did get the Gabriel's HDP then the shock is already longer (I think). The OME shocks are defenately longer.

Thanks. When I got my front OME shocks and torsion bars done 4x4MegaWorld told me there weren't really any options for shock length in the front and that the OME that they were going to fit were longer than the standard sizes they put on and the Monroes I had. At one stage I was considering sway bar disconnects and was wondering if that would mean I'd need even longer shocks in the front. I haven't jacked my front up yet to see if my shocks bottom before anything else but will do so and check.

Carl, the Ome Shocks front and back is usually 50mm odd longer than the OEM Toyota shocks. The Torsion can be turned that it lift the vehicle in the front. Just beware not to turn it too high otherwise the wheels will look like an VW beetle's. Also the bump stop on the arms have to have at least a Gap of 10-15mm on the lower.

Just also check the alignment, especially the Camber in the front if you lift it a bit high that it get shimmed to get the camber right.

In Werner's case he has the Safari's, when they fitted they fitted 2 same lenght shocks, the lefts, that is usually shorter. The right shocks are always longer. To give an example, his measured 570mm and should been 600mm at least. The Safaris is already longer than the OE,
the OME will be 652mm.

Ok, so finally got the shocks installed today after having to wait a bit for the shipment to arrive. Wow what a difference! Also had the 8th blade installed and now with the load of the canopy it is now level! From quick calculations it looks like 8cm lift in the front and estimating the back lift to about 10cm, but difficult to determine exactly with the canopy, liaded drawers dual battery and fridge loaded.

Thanks again so much to Louis and Shawn at 4x4 Megaworld in Menlyn! You guys rock!
