EFI Fuel Pump setup
Finally sourced a good priced EFI setup (around R1600 in your currency), and just wondering what people are doing with the fuel pump setup.
Have read thru all the different things you guys are doing and just wondering how these are going after some time running
How are you guys getting on running the HP pump straight off the tank under the truck? This is by far the simplist and cheapest setup.
Otherwise the surge tank with the mechanical pump feeding the LP side looks like a good idea also
Any input is much appreciated,
Thanks,
Clive

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
Clive, the HP pump is more a pressure pump that a suction pump hence the surge tank with the LP pump feed.
I ran the surge tank setup on my 22R EFI for a year with no issues. The same setup is now on the 5VZ (with a few mods) & is perfect.

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
I can confirm this. I used a cheap HP pump on mine, without the LP pump, you could hear it cavitating. Fitted a LP pump and the noise was better but the pump was damaged already. Started to loose major power at some stage, fitted a surge tank with a Bosch, all well again.zepplin wrote:Clive, the HP pump is more a pressure pump that a suction pump hence the surge tank with the LP pump feed.

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
My setup will be 4 years old by December. I have the LP pump into the surge tank and then the HP pump. Have had no hassles as yet. I have replace the rubber piping in between as a preventative measure

Hi Cassie,
How have you plumbed the surge tank? where does it vent?
What LP did you use?

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
Bolt had no surge tank or LP pickup pump, we just increased the diameter(to +-12mm) of the feed pipe all the way from the tank pickup to the HP pump. Used a decent Bosch pump, never had a days issue all the years she ran like this... pump ran super quiet!

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
Sounds like I will probably go the surge tank setup then. Sounds like the best option. Got the setup for a good price so don't want it being unreliable :)
(that price was including dizzy, alternator, and everything else :) )

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
I had an 8mm diameter pipe, the (cheap) pump still sounded like a constipated hippo, Facet pump and surge tank (small fire extinguisher) solved it.Mr_B wrote:Bolt had no surge tank or LP pickup pump, we just increased the diameter(to +-12mm) of the feed pipe all the way from the tank pickup to the HP pump. From tank through LP pump into surge tank. From surge tank through HP pump to Fuel rail. From fuel rail feedback back to surge tankkrazy_kameleon wrote:Hi Cassie,

We used a facet pump. Can't recall what make. Here is a picture of the two pumps we used. Note.. this is not the final arrangement. The surge tank is in place of the plastic filter and that filter was moved to in front of the LP pump and a high pressure filter after the HP pump.

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
Change the feeder piping inside the tank from 6mm to 10mm, no cavitation, no noise. Just use a decent 3 HP fuel pump from the beginning. Use 10mm normal plastic filter in front of the pump.Done over 11 Efi's like this, no problems.

Re: EFI Fuel Pump setup
I must say, I like the idea of not using a surge tank - the less parts/joins to worry about the better.4x4megaworldpta wrote:Change the feeder piping inside the tank from 6mm to 10mm, no cavitation, no noise. What you say here (and MrB) about bigger lines makes sense - think I will try this route first.

Tx
Spoke to Louis, turns out it is a normal Bosch 3 bar pump, 10mm in 8mm out.
