New Project Started.... 90% Completed

Hi Hiluxers

I have started a new project.
You will see what it is in the end......
This is my first atempt at something like this, so please be NICE.....

Will post pics of the progress as i go along with it.

Here are the pics i have for now.....

Ok so here it is....

I finished the project on the weekend.....

Decided to go with black but i dont like the finish on it, so I will be covering or repainting it soon.

But it fits like a glove and makes the drive more comfy too....
It has plenty space.....

I fitted a LED light on a pressure switch, so when you open the top the light comes on.....

What do you guys think about this........

All comments welcome.........

P.s I have to remake the drink holder as the top section is far to flimsy and has already cracked, thats why its not on the box now. But it will be as soon as i have redesigned it......

Looks good johno. Well done.

If you decide to cover it and you decide on fake leather, put a thin layer of soft foam between the leather and wood on the arm rest. Makes id a lot more comfortable. Use a staple gun to fasten it.

You can use HDPE plastic to remake those rings for the cupholders. You asked what to buy at Maizey's...now ya know. Otherwise scale one of the cutting boards boards from the kitchen set, same thing, also HDPE.

The English design...but a Boer makes it work

Why not use that carbon fiber look sheets that Francisco got the other day? You can buy it at the Boksburg flea market as well

I was planning on getting a Hi-Density foam for the arm rest and covering it with a washable cover.......
Need to get a new staple gun as ming has grown legs during our move...

The vinyl wont stick so lekker to the wood. Fake leather and thin foam will make it look like the bees-knees...

Wow...It looks great Johno... Wanted to get something like that madeup so that I can fit my camera's with lenses on next to me,ie between the seats when I am driving...

The only problem with that is i will have to strip the box down and cover each piece then re assemble it....
Or maybe i can send it in to get covered....

Wel i can tell you this box section is big enough for a camera and lenses...

Johno, if you want it covered take it to one of these "Doef-Doef" shops. It's quite normal to cover their sub boxes, etc. with vinyl/ leather. They use spray-on glue and a heatgun to stretch the vinyl around corners, etc.

Another option if you want to smooth out the paint is to cover the box with a thin layer of body putty, sand it smooth and then cover with paint. That should give you a nice smooth finish. But covering bare wood with paint will never give you the finish you want.

But it looks good!

I will look into that it sounds like a good idea.
This consol is made from supawood which has a smooth finish to start with so it should give me a smooth finish after painting.
But thinking about it I did spray it outside this weekend and it was windy from time to time so it could be fine dust that settled on the wet paint....

Nope. Tried everything I could think of when I was a laaitie and built my own sub boxes. The wood absorbs the paint and after a short while it starts looking tatty again. The best way to get a smooth finish when wanting to paint it, is to go the body filler route. Just make sure you sand the box rough before applying.

This was my idee to make maximum use of the centre console, I will strip this completely from all the outside covers and the unit will fit in just nice between the 2 seats within your setup....then there is always a colddrink close at hand

Also have a similar unit between my vans seats. Was also thinking of stripping the insides out and building it into a centre console... but then again... it already works

Just use filler coat / spray filler if it's only minor imperfections ...... a spray on filler is much easier and quicker to work with. Well done Johno!

Nice idea but then you will loose the storage space..... But if you dont mind that then it will be awsum..... Just make sure it can still get the correct amount of air to it...

Ok but you can paint wooden cupboard doors with enamel and they turn out ok
I'll try the enamel story first if it doesn't work then no harm done....

scorpion probably used normal chipboard to make his boxes from.
using supawood , you can use a descent stainer on it
apply 2 to 3 good coats ( u can even have a wood grain finish if you play around long enough)
then apply a little sand paper 900 or 1000 to just give you a real smooth finish

alternatively use 2k primer , sand to smooth and cover with 2k paint
depending on your spray skill you might still have to sand down

Plain and simple - I like :)

Maybe before you repaint, you should run a router with a round over bit over all the corners to make them nice and round and less susceptible to chipping. If you don't have a router, some rough sandpaper followed by finer grits will do the trick.

With Supawood (or any wood really), you have to either seal or paint a few coats, sand, then paint again if you want a smooth finish. maybe sand and paint again if you want a really fine finish.

I'm sure it will evolve in time - keep us posted!

Done it before it was painted...

Will sand it and repaint it this weekend hopefully...
