So I had Petrol put into my Diesel Tank

Post by Mikie »

So on Saturday my reserve light comes on so I pull into the next petrol station I pass, Country View Service Station in Midrand, I tell the guy, Full please, DIESEL.
And I went about checking my tyre pressure, he comes to me not too long after saying eish, I was talking to that guy and I put petrol instead of diesel

So I check and he has put in 6 litres, now I had to sit there for the next hour while they drained my entrie tank of any leftover diesel and Petrol in there, they then put in another 3 litres of Diesel and drained that. Tanks was then filled with 99 Litres of Diesel, R100 of which was on the house to cover the reserve bit that was in the tank, I am not so sure it covered it cos it was about 18 Litres, I usually fill up 70 litres when reserve comes on, and at R12.30 a litre that would be R221, but anyways I was just glad to get out of there, what a total waste of my time, They will never see me there again.

To the experts out there, should I expect any issues with my engine later? or would it have been diluted enough and drained enough to prevent any damage?

Sounds like they handled it correctly. If you have any issues it will not be from the contamination

Also no expert, but seriously doubt that there will be any hassles. I further doubt that any little bit of petrol mixed with a full tank would make any difference to anything at all. If there was a lot of petrol and this was a common and deliberate practice, then I think you would have issues ....EGT and subsequently the head as well as perhaps rubber O-rings and seals that are formulated to withstand deterioration from diesel but not petrol.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I have heard the some diesel owners actually put a cup of peterol into their diesel to boost the octane or power of the diesel. Is this an old wives tale or is there something to it?

I know a guy in Zim who had a very old diesel Landy a to start it he would spray petrol in the air intake and that was enough to fire up the motor. But he never ran it on petrol.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

From my limited understanding of the situation, there should'nt be any problem seeing that you did'nt start up your engine and try driving away with it...

I have also heard that it cleans the injectors but should only do this for every second full tank?
Any other experts opinion?

Happened to me once, tank was empty and guy filled up with petrol at a Sasol (their diesel nozzle is yellow) as I'm looking in the mirror saw a different colour nozzle but luckily it wasn't much, can't remember either, but he then swopped with diesel and filled up. No hassles whatsoever.

Nope, wasn't a lot. doubt if even 10 ltrs, can't remember so clearly now, but still no issues. 10 ltrs of petrol mixed in about 55 ltrs of diesel isn't much me thinks
