Post by Die$eL »

I have been towing a trailer with a car on it from joburg to mooi river. Around bergville the 4wd green light on the dash started flashing.

Any idea what it,means?

Had the same problem with my D4d. Light flashing and then when you swicth the ignition of and on again ir stops for a while. Acording to toyota it was the silinoid that ingage the front diff that was faulty. They replaced it and problem solved.

Thanks
I see that it could also be caused by the gearbox oil gettin too hot
will monitor and see.

Last year I also needed my clutch replaced this time of the year, and because everyone was closed had it replaced at Zwartkops racetrack, however the never replaced the pilot bearing or skimmed the flywheel, now it still makes a prominent sonbesie sound.

There is no winning with the sonbiesie sound. I had replaced the clutch before coz of that sound and it came back after 2000kms. Then the new clutch started slipping so I put the original one back. That's the one giving shyte now. Buying Another kit and fitting on thurs. That light comes on after about 70km of driving. Gearbox is slightly noisy now. Gonna change fluids as well. Hopefully that helps

Ok, so here is the story. Replaced clutch kit, rear seal on transfer box, and gearbox oil.

The 4x4 lights is still flashing after about 50km of driving. Seems like 4x4 is not engaging.
Thats not a prob for now. Are the two symptoms related? Can i drive back to gp like this?

I only know of Propshaft and Transmission World in Midrand. But has anyone checked the front solenoid?

Nope, haven't checked the solenoids. I don't know how. But the worrying part is that the gearbox is humming. I explained it to my mechanic buddy and he says it could be the main shaft bearings. Will get it stripped and checked when I'm back in gp. I'm worried that I need to tow the trailer back to gp. 'Ll be empty though

Looks like a breather. Quick fault finding tips. Check the center bearing ( turn propshaft by hand to see if bearing is moving freely). Disconect front propshaft to ensure noise is comming from back drive train and not from front end. ( Will also help to protect front diff. )

Thanks for the advice all

I'm thinking of taking the bakkie to "gearbox and diff centre" for them to diagnose and repair

has anyone here used them before? any feedback?

some feedback

i visited the gearbox and diff centre. spoke to a nice chap by the name of Andy.
we did a test drive and he concluded its not the diff making the noise but rather the front wheel bearings.

will replace both soon and feedback.

wrt the 4x4 light flashing i think its just coincidence that it started around the same time as the noise.

The 4wd does engage still but the light does not come on when it does. will get the solenoids checked/replaced.

I'm having the exact same problem. And the indicator doesn't go on when I switch to 4wd.
Is it an issue to keep driving like this, I mean with he indicator flashing while on 2wd??

Thanks!

Stephanie, it's best to have it checked out and repaired. If you experience a stiffness in the steering and / or hear the tyres scrubbing when turning on a hard surface like asphalt, then it means that the 4wd is in fact engaged and you should not drive it like that. Serious damage can be done. ;-)

Mine did the same thing, ADD got some water in it. 4x4 would not engage and 4x4 light kept flickering when driving in 4x2. Add was taken out and repaired, 4x4 engages now but light does not come on anymore. Check out our post under the workshop stickies
