Hilux Surf - Side shaft - done and dusted

Post by Ali3n »

As most of you are aware I snapped a side shaft over the weekend. Thanks to Jeepie (Shaun) who took it to 2 places for a quote. First place could not help but the second can but damn. I cant afford it. They quoted roughly R4k just for the material and said the total cost including labour, cutting, splining and hardening will work out to roughly R10k.

Does anyone know who I could contact for a possible better price?

Why do you have to have one made up? Isn't it just a standard stock item same as SFA/IFS rear or IFS front?
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thanks Fritz, That will be great. Even if it is the complete diff I would be interested.

Here is a pic of the shaft. Unfortunately it is only the diagram because I haven't had a chance to collect it from Shaun yet but once I do I will post that as well as the measurements.

So things seem to be falling in place. After a huge struggle to get hold of the sideshaft I finaly found 1. Thanks to Ronald Hairbottle. After toyota came back a few weeks later and said the part has been dicontinued and could not help me.

I then got a call from Ronald who said he was able to get one in the US for me. :yahoo: I placed the order and so hopefully by next week it should be here nex week. :yahoo: I must just take my diff in to him and he is going to repair it for me. Thanks Ronald.

I was also told that I should ask my insurance if I was covered for it as it was while 4x4'ing that it happened and I am covered for 4x4'ing. So I contacted RSA Agri and then was asked to submit a claim. Was contacted this morning by the assessors who told me the claim had been approved and that I just need to show them the vehicle as well as the diff before they sign it off fully. So tomorrow I will be at Mutual & Federal at Cresta for the assessment. I just want to say thanks to RSA Agri and Marile for the excellent service.   I was not sure that the claim would be entertained but trust me I am happy, I just did not budget to have to take out R10k one time so it is a welcome surprise.

Just a quick update on the progress of my side shaft.

Ronald Hairbottle was able to assist me with a side shaft from the US. He ordered it for me a while back. When he received it I sent my diff to him to install the side shaft. He then stripped the diff completely and found more damage.

Crown wheel, pinion and spider gear were destroyed. He could not find all the parts locally AGAIN so once again he had to order them. They arrived and he is in the process of putting it all back together. If all goes well I will have it here by the end of the week. :yahoo:

Lesson learned out of this is should it ever happen again I will be going over to a complete local 2.7/KZTE diff setup where parts are found locally. And it will not be a conversion as it is all bolt in. Only reason for not going this route now was to keep the electronic 4wd engagement without having to get out and lock the hubs.

Luckily I have managed to do a few other things while it has been out of commission. Replaced all the ball joints & bushes and painted the front end with Hammerite. :yahoo: I still need to sort out my power steering but hopefully that will happen in the next week or two before EFS and AAWDC.

Eish! Sorry to hear! :(

Unfortunately this is sometimes what happens when you own a 'grey import' ... some spares are not available locally. :eh:
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Would be more costly as it will entail replacing the entire drive setup, incl side shafts, hubs, usually brakes too, diff etc.etc.

All that is required is the complete front diff including hubs. Generally you get the sideshafts with the complete diffs. My current cv shafts and CVs are the same as well as brake calipers. I will then just change my diff ratios at the rear.

It will most certainly be costly but that will just be for the initial cost of replacement. After that all broken parts can be sourced locally at a much cheaper rate.

The current cost for the repairs are running at around R20k. for the replacement to local will cost around the same if not less. Already done my homework just for incase.

Another preventative measure I can do now is include a difflock which could reduce (Not eliminate) the risk of snapping another sideshaft in the front.

Once again here is an update...

My diff is here!!!! I will be collecting it later today from my b-i-l!!!! :yahoo: :yahoo:

Sideshaft came from the USA. Once it landed I sent the diff up to Ronald Hairottle (4x4Traction) for fitment. Once Ronald opened up the diff it went all down hill from there...

Everything was destroyed. Once again had to wait for new Crown wheel and Pinion and spider gears. That eventually arrived and everything was put back together. Tested and whoops. Carrier also bent and deformed...

Strip again and order new carrier. Luckily there was one availible in JHB so got it and put it all together again... :yahoo:

Basically a completely new diff. bearing, seals, gears... everything. Took long enough... Snapped it in the beginning of march and received it back middle October... almost 8 months but hey... Its done.. :yahoo:

Total costs running at R21 634.58. :shock2: If all damage was know prior to the parts being ordered I would have gone the replacement to SA spec OR even SFA conversion from the start but only found out while the repairs were being done. Now I know should it happen again.

Glad you have an update and that you are making progress again!

OMO was starting to become a myth, a legend talked about around camp fires!

It will be great to have her up and running again!

Good to hear.
The mistake most people make is they upgrade their motors and then stop there. With more power everything else can't handle it.
It would be good to see Omo on the trails again
