Front wheel fell off...
On an insignificant dirt road, no major 4x4, my front left wheel decided to "let go"!!
Second time I've seen my bakkie ontop a flatbed. Waiting to hear on Monday from the insurance company...
Someone must have "forgotten" the splitpin!?!?
I am hoping there is not more damage...
This is very sad! Second time I've seen my bakkie ontop a flatbed. Waiting to hear on Monday from the insurance company...

You can be grateful that ball joint didn't fail at speed along a busy route! Replace them all to be safe. Doesn't look like any other significant damage on the pics .... the outer CV looks like it may have taken a bit of strain, but will in all probability still be fine.
Hope the insurers come to your party.

Thanks for the advice about getting the other side checked... will do that!
I must admit, Thys, I was relieved that this happened close to home, and not on a trail somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and as Andy said it didn't happen at high speed.

Does this splitpin have a tendency to fall out?CasKru wrote: Just make sure the splitpin is still in place so that the nut cannot become undone by the vibrations
Thys, could this be what happened to you?
What could one do to prevent the splitpin from being pulled out? Cabletie!?!?

oh ok just weird how that knuckle came off,
I wouldn't recommend a cable tie no, a split pin is to stop it coming completely undone but the nut actually bends the split pinRoyco wrote:Does this splitpin have a tendency to fall out?CasKru wrote: Just make sure the splitpin is still in place so that the nut cannot become undone by the vibrations

That nut needs to be torqued correctly and see how close that comes to the holes for the pin
There are other pins like a cotter pin
hope this helps

Re: Front wheel fell off...
Those split pins will never just fall out if they're curled back, don't worry about them. Your failure was as a result of the ball joint itself failing, not a very common thing, at least not common without warring signs of it being worn .... things like it being noisy, shudders or pulling to the side when braking etc.

Re: Front wheel fell off...
Yeah Roy, on the Ford 1 of the 3 bolts holding the ball joint fell out, one was loose, and the 3rd one broke due to strain put on it because the other 2 was not helping to carry the load. When the 3rd one broke all the stress was transferred to the loose bolt, which also broke off a little while later.
Luckily we were in the Richtersveld NP when this happened, going down a river bed, where we couldnt drive faster than 4km/h. Heard a bang, but thought it was the chassis hitting a rock. When we stopped about 200m later we saw a very unhappy left front wheel.
I must say this though, it being a Ford made repairs easy. Why? Because Ford uses standard threads, and I could use normal stainless M8 bolts to screw the ball joint back on. If it was a Hilux with Toyota Special Fine Medium Exotic Thread, I would not have been able to do a field repair unless I had nuts/bolts with the right threads..
Took us a cup of coffee and 2 ciggies to get the Ford back on all 4's and I think it is still running with those bolts holding the ball joint..

I thought the shudder, was due to a slightly flat tyre. hhmmm.... I will need to pay careful attention to these small tell-tale signs in future. Thanks.
