Hello from Kokstad
Hi Guys
Just wanted to say Hi to the Hilux crowd here.
I have just bought my first SFA.
Some of you will recall the vehicle that the two Dutch travellers were selling.
Well its new owner in the Cape battled to pay the fuel bills so listed it again.
I drove it up from the cape two days ago and have to say so far I am very happy.
It came with all the gear that Misha sold it with as in the picture attached.
Anyway, weather permitting we will be going up Sani with her this weekend.
There are a few bits that need tweeking and some upgrades we will do but for the most part she is going to be my Bushpig hunting vehicle and family adventure car.
We look forward to being part of the Hilux 4X4 crowd and meeting up with you all at some point.
We are based outside Kokstad along the N2 so if anyone needs a friendly place to pitch a tent you are welcome to stop by.
Kind regards
Ian Blakeway

Ian, that is NOT a Mahindra. That's a very good looking Toyota. Change your profile specs!

Thanks Chaps
Apprecoate the welcome.
Yes, you are right, the Mahindra has done its job 2x4 and all but it was time for the big guns and that Hilux was just too good to pass up.
Dale, Shelton and Melanie are just down the road from me, it will be good to catch up.
FirstGear, where are you based. I spend a lot of time in Elliot, Ugie,Maclear and Barkly.
Anyway, let the fun begin.

Re: Hello from Kokstad
Already loving my Hilux
Will report back after the Sani weekend.
Neil Blakeway is a secind cousing to my father. Many of the Blakeway clan dispersed from Grahamstown in the early 1880's
I have a question.
For those who have done the Brospeed conversion, did the extra fuel economy make it worthwhile.
With all the kit on I get about 6km/l. But the average speed up the hills etc drops down to about 65-75km/h
Have any of you done the conversion and what were your observations.
Chat soon

Re: Hello from Kokstad
Had a 4Y with Brospeed .... made a small difference but no significant changes to economy. These are notoriously thirsty motors and not fast on the open road. EFI might be your best bet to improve on both power and economy .... that, along with a moderate driving style. Remember, the vehicle is heavy and as aerodynamic as a brick ... ride height doesn't help that either. Best is to come to terms with it, but you should be getting better than 6km/lit .... have the carb serviced and the motor tuned. Advance the timing a little ... spec says 9° BTDC but 11 / 12° will give you a bit more legs without compromising the low end power too much. If it pings under load, you have to retard it a little till the pinging stops.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Re: Hello from Kokstad
Hi Mud Dog
Thanks for the advice.
I dont think I will go the EFI route, like to be able to fix on the fly so to speak.
Tuning was the route I would like to go down.
This may have come up before but are there any SFA Experts here in KZN. Preferably south of Durban?
Thanks for the advice.

Re: Hello from Kokstad
What ort of consumption do you get with your SFA
Mine has the aircon pipes in but no compressor, as I want to head to Namibia i would like to refit it.
What do you suggest.
There was a KZ aircon pump on teh forum, would it work for the SFA or should I look for one on the scrap heaps?

Re: Hello from Kokstad
My 2.2 may have been a bit of an anomaly ..... I used to get about 10k/lit on the open road but with a load and heavy foot I only got about 8k/lit which is mote or less what I would get in town. Seems like not even the EFI guys are achieving those figures. I rebuilt and set the carb up myself, had a brospeed job and set timing to 12° BTDC. Like I said, driving style is very significant.

Re: Hello from Kokstad
Thanks everyone.
lekker bunch of people here on the forum.
I went up Sani on the weekend.
Loaded with rooftop tent and all the kit for the weekend got 6,5km/l at a about 100kph on the open roads, about 60 up the hills.
Then filled in Underberg and went up Sani, carried on up to highest point in Lesotho and back down to underberg next day.
Average including the switchbacks in low range was 5km/l
Think my carb needs a service as it was sticking open a bit on the way up and I have very black soot in the pipe and a petrol smell after startup.
Guru's give me some advice.
I am looking at adjusting the timing as a starting point. Let me know your thoughts
Thanks

Will post some later this morning.
You will have a lot more snow up there when you come round than we did.
The pass is a bit rough on the switchbacks and there are a few spots that need work.
Good fun though.
Chat later

Re: Hello from Kokstad
There is a float chamber sight-glass on the front of the carb ...... shows the float level. It should be exactly centre of the glass, not over .... rather a fraction under. Are there any signs of fuel leakage around the carb. Auto choke should be checked that it's opening fully. Idle solenoid should be checked that it's working.
Sounds like the carb needs a bit of TLC urgently.
