Exhaust system

Hi all,

I am driving a 1987 Hilux 2.2 Petrol with 4Y engine.
Everything is standard as it was on the bakkie…

I had a discussion the other day with someone if it is worth it to do an exhaust system modification in order to get more power and better petrol consumption.

What do you guys think? And what can you recommend?

Only one way to get more power - EFI! Speak to Louis at 4x4Megaworl Menlyn.

I threw my noisy exhaust out in favour of a standard Bosal exhaust - I long ago outgrew the need for an annoying BBBBBBRRRRRR on the open road.

You gain a little bit with everything, to have a real improvement you need to do the branch, exhaust, cam and flow the head to push it from 65 to about 85 KW. If you do only one of the above, you wont gain much if anything. The EFi will add the cherry on top, another 10 KW and even more torque, but fuel consumption is debatable.

I have a Weber carb on the same 4y Motor, how much difference will the efi make with regards to fuel consumption and power?

I have a 38 Weber on my previous 4y SFA .EFI mucth more powerfull than the weber.Feul consumpsion more or less the same.I get 6.9-7.3 k/m p/l at 120 km/ph with a Mikem suspesion lift on my EFI conversion.

I do not have a suspension lift on my previous SFA.

Thanks Dawie, you sold me. i find it hard to get 120 on the highway as is, so the extra boost in power is exactly what Im after.
Now the get bucks together for the conversion.

If you are the same person,the carb i sold to you was the original Nikki Carb.The weber was on my previous SFA which i sold the vehicle with.

With the Nikki carb i still do not have any problems to get 120 plus km.

Sorry Dawie, not the same Jaco, there seems to be a lot of us on this forum.
I bought the bakkie as is with the dual throat weber carb on it. I can get to 120 on the highway with a bit of a push but once i hit an uphill it drops down to 80 again.
Is this normal for a bakkie as old as mine (1985) with over 500k on the clock?

I had a 36 DCD on mine before EFI and have to say the Weber did respond quicker with the progressive throttles, but the EFI is more pleasurable.. Branch and exhaust will give you more kW vs Nm and that extra little bit of omph on the open road.. But you will never have a race horse in the 4Y.. They are built for torque.

What size wheels are you running and do you know what ratio you have in the diff?

Im Not sure what the ratios are on the diff, as far as i know its an "import" with no modifications.
Wheels are PIRELLI SCORPION i think they 255/70 R15 if i remember correctly.

One thing to keep in mind is that with EFI you can adjust fueling incrementally for every fraction you would like.. With a carb you have set rpms where your fueling will be exact and that is not always where you want it to be.. Have a drive in an EFI version and decide for yourself. I have had my motor redone and added a cam (more torque than kW) and as soon as the motor is run in properly I will let it loose on a Dyno to determine Kw and Nm figures, but sadly not doing 140km/h on the open road like I would want it yet.. Much more of a 115-120km/h motor.

I was well aware when i bought the bakkie that it wont be the quickest, 115-120 is good enough to get around though. Let me know when you put yours on the Dyno, will be good to know what the 4y can push out with those modifications. Thanks Again for all the advice, much appreciated.
