prop shuddering

Post by bananaman hilux »

hi i have a mark two hilux with a V8 fitted.
when i pull off in either reverse or forward it shudders.
my mate stood behind and said it is the prop shuddering.
once i get going it is fine.
i have had a new prop shaft centre bearing and new universal joints fitted but it still does it i have had the truck lifted slightly.
if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated.
thanks j

According to my knowledge that doesn't sound like the propshaft causing the problem. If it was the prop it would have continued doing that in higher revs as well.

How old is your clutch? If you pull away in second does it also shudder?

Welcome Bananaman :!: May your stay be an experience and you experience be why you stay :!:

I will have to jump on the wagon here and say I reckon your clutch is shaped like your name, banana style

Hi bananaman

Welcome here on the Best 4X4 forum by far

You say it is the same shape as the KZTE?

Had the same problem when i had the prop on my 2.7i replaced .The people made up a new shaft without the "Double Knuckle" and it shuddered from the start .but just at pull away and some times as you dropped the clutch for second .after balancing it several times the "knuckle" was put in and it was fine ever since

Hope it helps

What Bell Housing have you fitted :?: :?: :?:

When I researched the bigger engine conversions, a generic bell housing kept coming up as "a cause of shudder"

Only an original OEM was the answer

Hope this helps Jamie

you mite have a bit of diff wrap running a v8 it can happen .

have a look at the snake racing version http://72.34.32.141/~snakerac/product_i ... 9d7d5316e9

my mate put one in his hilux "not a snake racing one" but made one out of two jonny joints and tube and he said it make heaps of difference in reverse no shudder and smother take off. or you clutch is stuffed or a g/box or engine mount could be stuffed .

Banana man now that you hanve all the opinions in the world as to your shudder let old blommie tell you what is wrong

1 check your gearbox mounting she is loose.
2 check your torq side engine mount she is loose

now quickly fix and thank me later (send some over the sea beer this way)

Ja as Blommie said ist check the mountings on the engine and GB. If that is fine, then check your prop to ensure that the slip joke is aligned properly so that the universal joints line up, if not pull the slip joke apart and rotate so that the UJs line up before reassembling it.

Is your gearbox not maybe facing upwards to the rear as a result of the conversion so that the angles on the UJs are too big? If so dropping the rear of the gearbox and sometimes the centre bearing if you have a high rear suspension lift to minimize the angles on the UJs may also help a bit.
