Spray painting - Requirements?
I want to get myself a descent compressor for general use and spray painting (automotive type of spraying). What is the minimum tank size and air flow rate I should look at. I would like to pay as little as possible but also know that penny wise, pound foolish.
So I just want to get the correct "balance"
Also, when buying a spray gun, gravity feed or suction feed?

Re: Spray painting - Requirements?
i have a gravity feed de-vilbis (R700) about a year ago and it works great for general use.
they say 200L is minimum. i'm using a 50L ABAC for the last 5 years and hasn't given me a days trouble.
i want to go to a 280L 3 Phase ingersol rand, because i want to use more air tools, but those are R16500 now

Re: Spray painting - Requirements?
I have an Ingersol Rand 100lit and a 50lit for carting about if I need to. The 100lit copes fine with continual spraying, even do small sand blasting jobs with it and it's worked 23yrs for me without any hassles .... I once had to top up the crank oil, took less than 100ml. Otherwise I only clean the air filter .... still has the original belt on it. The 50lit is less than a year old and I've sprayed successfully with it, no problem.
I have both gravity feed and suction ..... prefer the gravity feed, but if it's a bigger job then I use the suction because it has a larger capacity. Usually spray at about 2½ bar with the gravity and about 3 - 3½ with the suction. You can achieve a little bit finer mist with higher pressure but you get quite a bit more over-spray .... just wastes paint.
Many of the smaller compressors don't provide an unregulated take-off or a water trap. Try get one that has those things .... if no water trap, you can always fit one .... essential for automotive quality spraying.

Re: Spray painting - Requirements?
Baie belangrik vir spraypainting:
Tandeborsel
Listerine.

Re: Spray painting - Requirements?
Built my own compressor about 5 years ago. Used a big handy gas bottle, 2.2 Kw motor and a twin cylinder head. Works very good, cant remember the costs but it was around R4500. New compressors at that stage were about R6500. I use mostly a gravity feed spray gun, works much better when spraying a roof as the h/p gun tends to touch the roof when spraying. I would rather use a bigger compressor and have too much air than have to wait for air to build up.My opinion.

But seriously, they need to be checked, tank needs to be inspected .... condensation inside (even though vented) causes rust errosion of the walls, especially at the bottom where it lies. Can cause a tank to rupture and blow up if the errosion is deep enough. So beware of older 2nd hand units.

Re: Spray painting - Requirements?
I have a gravity feed spray gun and one of them very small compressors, think it is 50 litres. Works fine for me, sometimes it even switches off while I am spraying. Has been using it to spray everything I built and about 8 years ago even sprayed my Golf Bakkie with it. I like the small size because it does not take up much space in the garage and I can take it anywhere I like with ease.
