Hi Agteros

Ja, daai bakkie van jou is ook classic. Ek mis my SFA D/C.

Groete

Hi Almal

Wonderlik!

Looking very good, Johan! Now you need to install an equally good alarm system so that Great White does not acquire a new owner without your knowledge.

That truck really is a Toyota legend!

Great restoration Johann, my old man owned one of these between 1992 and 2008. It gave incredible service during this period and he still spots in it traffic earning its keep around East London. I have the 18R Toyota Manual lying around at home. If you don't have one in the cubby hole, just send me a PM and I can post it to you.

Hi Mofasa

A job like this can be done in approx 2 weeks.
However, I was not in any hurry and explained to Pieter that he can take his time and also work on his other jobs at the same time.
From when actual work started on my bakkie it took just over 4 weeks. But like I said - no hurry was required.

As for the price; I discussed with Pieter a good price/deal, and in return he wanted me to spread the word about his quality work. Also, the windscreen and lights etc was extra, while he sourced the new bonnet and panels from Frederick Lange (Cruiser forum member and importer of all 4x4 fittings, exesories, autobody etc etc)

It cost me less than 20K, but for as quote I suggest contacting Pieter directly.

Morning guys

As you know, great white is resting in Pretoria and his autobody and paint job has been completed.

So this past saturday, I flew up to JHB with my normal luggage for 3 days AND 4 x shock absorbers. I bought and paid for leaf springs from Kobe, and that was waiting for me at the warehouse in Jetpark. (poor friend that picked me up..had to drive me to pickup a set of front leave springs.. hehehe)
I decided to go with Monroe shocks as I was happy with them on my previous SFA. I settled for the extended shocks front and back.
The standard codes for my vehicle is M5454 in the front (same as 85 -98 SFA) and rear M8042. But as I said, I bought the extended gas magnum shocks as I knew that Great White would get a lift with the thicker blade pack.
Thus, for the front I bought AU16-1702 (made in Aus) and the rear M4445 (extended rear shocks for 85-98 SFA - had them on my D/C)
I got it all from my local Midas. They had to order and wait a day for the front ones as they are not that common.

Leaf springs: as the rear packs of Great White are still in great condition (even under load) I decided to only replace the front packs - they were not flat but bending negatively..
The standard setup on this vehicle is normally a 4 blade pack. I decided to rather go with the 5 blade pack from Kobe as I have had the same on "Riffie", my previous SFA. And because I see a lot of guys even fitting 6 blade packs with thinner blades. So decided best is 5 blades.

I phoned Jaco at the warehouse and paid for the packs in advance and picked them up on Saturday morning after I touched down and phoned the security...

Fast Forward...
I got to my folks, jumped in great white and drove to Pretoria Springs in PTA west (gave me a good quote on the phone)

Plan was to:
1. Replace bushes front and back with Polyurethane bushes (24 in total)
2. Replace front leaf springs
3. Fit new shocks, front and back
4. If needed/possible fit extended shackles at the rear

With regards to no. 4 on the list.. They did not have stock of the extended shacles and had to order or make, which takes a couple of days.
SO, if the new 5 blade packs lifted the vehicle bit too much in the front, I had to maar drive uphill all teh time..

Some pics, before I continue..
Great White

So, to make a long story short..

The front leaf springs (4 blade) was replaced with a 5 blade pack.
All bushes was replaced (polyurethane) front and back
The front shocks was fitted.

The rear shocks was not fitted..
In the Monroe manual there is only one shock specified for this model (M8042).
But because the specified front M5454 is interchangeable with the 79-84 and the 85-98 SFA and also the extended AU16-1702, I thought the same would apply to the rear..

Obviously I was mistaken.. (die enigste keer, voor hierdie keer wat ek verkeerd was, was toe ek gedink het ek is verkeerd)

I was informed by Pretoria Springs (who gave me excellent service), that they unfortunately cant help me. They cannot exchange the shocks with their stock, nor did they have a different bush to sort out the size difference of the shock hole..
-the new shocks had a biger "bracket" or hole where the rubber bushes goes in-

Furthermore, Pta springs could not assist with the other (minor) problem: The front was now slightly higher than the rear.. And they dont have extended shacles for this..

So Monday morning I phoned Van Zyl's Spring works.

I spoke to a guy named Johan who was very helpfull and informed me that they do have the correct and high quality greasable shackles that I require.

So I made my way to them with Great White and swore my ass off because of all the new f*$king street names in and around Pretoria.

When I got there I was refered to Jannie by Johan and he worked with me from there on. What a great guy!

they fitted the shacles in next to no time. I also explained my predicament with the shocks and complained that I had to fly back with them..
Jannie immediatly got on the phone with his Midas rep to try and help me exchange my shocks with the standard specified shocks.

The shackles were fitted and Midas could not help me (which was a relief as I really wanted extended shocks, specialy with the new longer shackles)

Jannie was such a nice guy and said I must bring the shocks in and he guarantees that they will have the proper polyurethane bushes to make them fit..

But first, mondays pictures..

Now the new shackles just lifted the rear enough to be in proportion the the front. It is perfect! :yahoo:
The vehicle is now perfectly level, back and front - with time the front will settle and drop a few mm. But that is fine. The 5 blade front pack will keep the correct shape. (It will as I had the same on my previous SFA with a heavier 22R motor and heavy bull bar - and that kept the correct shape for 3years and untill the day I sold it!)

So I was very happy on Monday when the shackles were fitted. Unfortunately I did not have the new Monroe shocks with me when I was there on Monday.. But Jannie promised that he could make a plan..

So Tuesday morning I was back at Van Zyl's (had to be quick as I had to fly back to KZN in the afternoon..)

Once Jannie had his hands on the shocks, he disappeard into a back room filled with bright yellow and green bushes and fittings, emerging with a better solution than Monroe gives themselves!

Jannie has Polyurethane bushes that fit my shocks with a steel insert that fits 100% snugly over the existing receiver tubes of this model Hilux.
Perfect!

Now he did not even charge me labour to fit my new shocks or forthe 8 new bolts he bought! (yes, he sent a driver to go and buy 8 new longer than std bolts for the wider bushes) Thanks Jannie.

I only paid for the bushes and thate price was cheap. I would definately recommend buying the bushes from them when fitting new shocks, as most shocks are supplied with soft rubber bushes and they dont last as long as Polyurethane.

Here comes the pics..

Here you can see the 2 bushes that fit inside the diameter of the shock bracket. Through these 2 bushes goes the galv steel tube that fits snuggly (copper hammer helps) over the existing tube on the chassis and susspension plate.
This setup is slightly thicker/wider that the standard rubber bushes that comes with the shock.

Hi Guys

So my friend Xander Human went to my folks house and took some pictures of Great White, after the suspension upgrade. (with his phone)

Now you can see the difference in the hight (will also load a before pic after I have loaded Xander's pics)

So as you can see, the balance between front and rear height is great and the vehicle got an overall lift with the 5 blade front leafsprings and the extended shacles at the back.

I will look for a picture where it still had the old suspension..
