V6 - Urgent experienced advice please
Hi Guys
Im looking at a 2008 Fortuner V6 Auto 4x4 and while test driving it, there is a whining noise coming from the engine. It goes away as you go faster, most likely because of general road noise. Its not the drivetrain, all is working hundreds, and i also hear it when stationary and revving the engine.
I then went to Automark and started a 2010 model, same but slightly softer. Dealer says they all do it?
Can anyone confirm this on your V6?
Thanks in advance,
Grumbles

By the explanation it sounds like a bearing noise so my guess is a tensioner pulley making the noise.

My 4.0l V6 is quiet. I only hear 200kw of awesome power.

Re: V6 - Urgent experienced advice please
If the timing belt has been recently replaced it could also produce a whine that will disappear with time as it wears in. Obvious other sources are bearings and even fan-belts, particularly if over tensioned.

Re: V6 - Urgent experienced advice please
The V6 doesn't have a timing belt, but rather a timing chain, with hydraulic tensioner... in fact the engine has 3 timing chains, the main one and then 2 that drive the variable valve timing mech. The main culprit in terms of noisy bearing on this engine is the idler pulley bearing, unfortunately it's a sealed unit, and unless you're willing to spend some money on engineering(like I did) you will have to buy the complete unit for Toyota. This is especially true if you have done water crossings recently.

Thanx all for the info, I ended up not buying that one, and I think end the end, my love is still for the D4D, so now the hunt is on for one of those.
Cheers,

Thanks for that Bretton ..... chains are so unpopular these days because they aren't as quiet as belts and I just assumed the V6 cams were belt driven like the Lexus.
