KZ-TE heavy fuel consumtion

Post by 4x4 Junkie »

Good Day Gentleman,

I have trolled the forum, but I do not seem to get the answers that I need. I have recently noticed that my 2002 KZ-TE has become extremely heavy on diesel. Previously I could easily count on 9.5 to 10.5 Km per litre, but recently I struggle to get 7km per litre :wth: :blackeye:

I have done some research and I have checked that my break linings do not bind and my air cleaner is new out the box. Yet I still suffer between trips to the pump and back.

Please can someone that has had similar problems maybe help with advice of what to look for or what to fix. I know that taking my baby to the "stealers" will probably also help, but if I can go with a few arrows in my quiver, chances are less that I will be taken for a ride. .
If you still have blank pages in your passport, it's probably time for a road trip.

Is it smoking black smoke under load?

What is the mileage?

Maybe check the injectors and pump

When diesels get old their injectors and pump need to be replaced/services otherwise they become heavy on fuel.

Try a new fuel filter aswell.

Maybe check the air inlet pipe for restrictions, even before the air cleaner.

What about an airleak on the fuel pipes?

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

My truck now has 265000km on the clock. This is the first time I am having a "major" issue. Have enjoyed 150000km trouble free km's.

I have done all the checks (except air lock in the fuel system)

Piet there is a bit of smoke under load (like driving uphill), but not excessive. I have seen other diesels that smoke very heavy. My truck just leaves a bit of a haze.

Grant, I have received a quote to replace the tips of the injectors for R 1300 for all four.

Thanks if you could PM me who you got the quote from please.

Have you done any adjustments to the van ie: handbreak cable things that may cause resistance?

Hi Grant, I have made sure that the brakes aren't binding, yes.

The guys that quoted me is local here in Cape Town. My mechanic is in Gordon's Bay and the diesel technicians are somewhere in Brackenfell.

Hi, was it by any chance Archman power diesel in Brackenfell? They recently rebuilt my dieselpump, and i can feel the lux is now much more alive. Still have to drive out a full tank to see "new" fuel consumption figures, but i am excited.

In all probability it could be fuel pump timing. Archman has the Denso kit to set it correctly - speak to Vian. They are in Okavango industrial area.

One of the reasons I went for the Colt option.(R4700)

Thanks guys.

My mechanic quoted R15K :blackeye:  :shock2:

So the R12.5K is already an improvement. Will give Vian a call.

I don't like the Colt option. My research suggests that the rev counter will no longer work after this conversion. This is due to the stock pump being connected through the ECU and the Colt pump is mechanical and therefore the rev counter don't work anymore.

Then I rather save up and do it right.
