This is a Hilux forum. Most dudes here will tell you that for both reliability and resale, go Lux.
If there is a Ranger forum, they'll tell you go Ranger.
If there is not a Ranger forum, ask yourself why not, and why a bunch of guys and girls who live such diverse lives will come together on a forum such as this one to not only support their Luxes, but each other too... And why the Ford fans don't...
I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

The man has a valid question, if you remove all badges and go for a test drive, you will buy the Ford, it has better roadholding, brakes, power and comfort.
The Hilux has better build quality, is the best off-road, will last longer and has better resale value, it has the best low down power and it's lighter on fuel in "working" conditions, all things cosidered, a better but not "nicer" vehicle.

Agree 100% Allan but the Ford has a long way to go to earn trust through reliability - as the Hilux enjoys.

My farther had 2 Rangers (previous) models - and as I die hard Ford fan will never buy a Ford again due to brake downs and issues.

I am a VW fan but the Amarok is in the same boat as the Ford. Time will tell.

And here I am in the process to get a first gen 2005 ford supercab for work. Still won't sell my hilux to buy a Ford tho. Hilux are just too good in reliability went through 3 2700i and just no issues at all other than the fuel they love.

We owned a legend40 and now a Dakar. When we traded in the legend40 we actually got change in our pocket after settling the bank. Few vehicles have such good trade/resale and that is what makes a Hilux a good buy. The d4d can be very light on diesel if driven conservatively.

With the Dakar model you basically paying for a few nice cosmetics. The black leather seats with red stitching is nice. I'm guessing you going to be buying 4x2, because if you intend to go off-roading rather save the premium and put it towards proper suspension and a bullbar etc on a normal Raider unless you getting a real good deal. All those nice s/s accessories will get damaged.

Truth is the current Hilux is very boring. Every brand has there pro's and cons so test drive both and decide for yourself. When I first saw the Triton I told myself how could anyone drive that thing. Guess what, we now own one.

I was sitting with the same question before I bought my lux. ford looks nice and has more luxuries etc etc. then started searching good and bad about both, found lots and lots of complaints about the ford gearboxes and software issues and and and . then I bought my lux and could not have been happier.

Just think about it, if you open your garage door in the morning, which one
would you like to see standing there waiting for you.

I know which one I would go for, as do many other forum users I suppose.

The manual D4D is the better one for resale.

That is one negative thing about Toyota dealers, you can call it "arrogant", because they sell so many vehicles, it's hard to find a salesman that will go the extra mile for you.
A friend of mine bought a 3.o D4D, and had the same problem, i started phoning different dealers and played them up against each other, i managed to get the vehicle R30 000.00 cheaper in the end.

Hi guys new to the forum, traded my 2.2 Ranger on the 2.5 Hilux a few weeks back. Will never touch Ford again, rubbish. Nice looks but absolute pathetic quality. Maybe I just had a bad experience, but in my opinion cannot compare difference in quality between Hilux and Ranger. Only had Ranger for 7000km and one year of which it spent nearly three months in workshop for repairs.
Ford also have a bad attitude toward customers with warranty issues etc.

Take a drive, a long drive, see how many fords you meet. Go to the EC, go north into Africa, spares, reliability, build quality all make Toyoto king in Africa. How many taxis does ford make? Nada.

We have been using fords at work for the 11 years I have been here, spend a lot of time going for repairs. And off road just can't match Toyota.

The latest Ranger model I find very hard on the suspension side. If you want comfort get a ford, if you want bling get a ford, if you wanna go far and come back every time, it's obvious.

Ask yourself why do places like Namibia, Lesotho and Botswana govs all use Toyota. Even abroad Toyota still holds its ground.

I bought my 2.7! 35 legend shape many years ago (2nd hand) and although its not used daily and in immaculate condition with low mileage, I was offered a lot more than what I paid, and that's without accessories! There's no other ordinary vehicle brand in this country and apparently Down Under and even in the States that can compare with this. If I was in the market for a new truck right now, I'll wait for the new Hilux. Its simply the best most reliable vehicle. Before the Lux one of the vehicle's I had was a 2.5 Ranger (2000 model), and although, I liked the power, the gearbox gave me endless trouble. The new Ranger is a nice ride, with good looks and lots of power but its not reliable.
