Very interesting .
SA must then be the only country in the world where shack dwellers increased during the past 20 years.

Piet, the reason for that increase? Is the decrease / relocation of the shack dwellers in our neighboring countries! :evil:

There has also been an unprecedented influx of rural people into the cities looking for employment and a 'better life'. Some of those have a home in a nearby town but make use of a shack (Mon to Fri) closer to where they have found work.

few SA facts ...

1976 - SABC is launched in SA, limited hours of broadcasting, and no adds on a Sunday.

1981 - 5 schools in the Western Cape form part of a trail group to use calculators in school, putting log tables aside forever.

1983 - ATX computers with a single floppy drive become available to the very wealthy ...

1994\5 - the first cell phones are launched in SA, for the excessively wealthy. One week later Telkom executives see a guy in a rusted bakkie driving with a cell phone to his ear (YES that is how long it took to start talking on the phone while driving). They pulled the guy over to hear THIS has replaced his secretary and how happy he is that he can now speak directly to his clients .... the next week Telkom starts planning a MASSIVE roll out ..... hardly 20 years and these blasted things have taken over our lives ...

late 90's SA was officially downgraded to a third world country - due to the high ILLETTERACY rate ....

Murders - http://www.crimestatssa.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
World average - 7,6 people per 100 000
South Africa - 36,5 per 100 000

the SA murder stats would then be 60% of the world stats ....

Life expectancy - http://beta2.statssa.gov.za/?p=2973" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2005 it was 52 years, due to the AIDS deaths ...
currently life expectancy is 61 in SA ....
still people talk of more and more people running out of money in the 70's and 80's ... somehow the maths dont add, or more to the point the stats are horribly skewed due to life style choices ...

kids in school - anybody that follows matric pass rates are accutely aware of the number of drop outs before matric exams ....

infant mortality - http://www.indexmundi.com/south_africa/ ... _rate.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
SADLY SA still has an infant mortality rate of about 41 DEATHS per 1000 births

Cancer - http://www.sahealthinfo.co.za/cancer/ov ... cument.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
SA stats too inaccurate to make any meaningful conclusion ...

wierd, strange, interesting and sometimes downright sad to compare OUR stats to those of the rest of the world ...

In April 1994, the Cell phone network was launched, i bought mine that same month, an Ericsson with a rubber swing-out aerial, it could store 10 numbers and the owners manual was as big as the one for my Hilux. It created some stares and comments like you won't believe, most people said it will never take off. The Ericsson had one great function i've never had again, it would automatically add the area code, unless you selected one. There were no restrictions, i used mine in the bank, car and everywhere, it was a big mistake to take it to a party, everyone tested it and you ended up with a huge bill and airtime was really expensive at first, about five to ten times more than a land-line.

Another amazing fact:

In April 1994, the Cell phone network was launched.
Fact!

I bought mine that same month,
Touche! Fact!

an Ericsson with a rubber swing-out aerial,
Touche! Fact!

But I went one further - I was fascinated that it could handle about 15 (or more?) foreign languages, so I tried this out. Took me about an hour to find English again, the foreign languages were indeed foreign and I think they were probably from other planets in the Solar System - I could not recognise anything remotely even looking like a word with which I was even slightly familiar. Fact!
