4Y Engine swop
I got a beautifully restored 1983 Hilux, RN46 Range.
It has a very good 4Y motor, but I am lusting after more power and diesel.
What motor can be fitted to the existing bell housing?
I dont mind changing engine mounts and other stuff, but I am uneasy about adaptor plates - but willing to learn.
Your thoughts and ideas?
Ingo

Re: 4Y Engine swop
Welcome Ingo. Some of the other guys can correct me if I'm wrong..... but when looking at a diesel engine a 2CT or a 2LT will bolt onto the existing bell housing. The engine mounts will have to move though.

Thanks for the input.
Lexus - too big and heavy (and thirsty?) for me.
The 2CT / 2Lt - are they not rather low on power and torque?

Actually
The 1uz engine weighs around 175 kg. (http://www.lextreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3611" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
I guess that does make the lexus a full 1kg heavier than the 4y's gross weight 174 kg. (http://deutzengine.en.made-in-china.com ... oyota.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
and seriously, what would you consider heavy on fuel? What consumption do you get with the 4y?
I have personally blown a 2l, and a 2l2 engine in a single cab SFA by over revving them by not altering the gear or diff ratio's. I know that the KZ-T conversion also needs modifications to the ratio's and I believe the same applies to the C range of engines too. Diesels doesn't like to be revved high constantly. This shouldn't be a problem if you change gears quickly and not drive faster than 100.
(see viewtopic.php?f=98&t=2356" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
Only diesel that sounds worth investing in seems to be the Mazda WL engine (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35967" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
If you change to any of the above engines, you WILL have to change your bell housing. In some cases, you'll replace your mountings and radiator too.
If you want to do a conversion, be prepared to make things fit.

Convert the 4y to fuel injection for more power.

Re: 4Y Engine swop
My father in law fitted a 2L2 in his Chev Luv with a Hilux gearbox and transfer case. The power is more than sufficient for its application. Its been running with that engine for almost 10 years now. No issues at all. He used to spend a lot of time in the kalahari dunes with his Chev and was very pleased with the engines performance.

Will the 2.7 EFI Petrol be a problem to fit and mount to the existing bellhousing?
Seems like a good motor with lots of performance?

Hi Willied
On the question of how much can I spend...
I hope to spend as little as possible, on the other hand if the best option costs R20k than it may be worthwhile??
No for the answers...:-)

Re: 4Y Engine swop
Probably not. Every engine block series is different. usually bellhousings from the same range are the same (eg a 1l, 2l, 2l2, 3l, and 5l will use the same bellhousing, but it will be different from the 2c and 1kz-te)Ingo15 wrote:Will the 2.7 EFI Petrol be a problem to fit and mount to the existing bellhousing?

In rare cases like the 1kz-te and KD range which basically uses the same block, you might be lucky.

I would suggest that you try to get a 2.7 (3RZ engine) with it's gearbox, wiring harness and computer for the best reliability if you want to go this route.

Re: 4Y Engine swop
Wow it seams this conversation died a year ago. I would have liked to see the "wise mens" input about changing engines as I am sitting with a dying 5L Diesel engine and would like to hear peoples comments about swapping it out for a 3L engine (apparently they bolt in). Has anyone done a similar heart transplant ?
