Cant get the balance right?

Post by wazungu »

been to two different supaquicks for wheel balancing (3 times in all) both shops tell me the balancing is out then they correct it, but low and behold when I hit the highway the shudder is still there.
its only at about 100-110kph then goes away, its not a classic steering vibration, the whole vehicle shakes a bit. am I missing something? does anyone know of a specialist who can help me?

Sounds like a prop shaft problem.

Propshaft...typical to start shuddering at that speed. Whole vehicle.
If it was only a tyre/rim, you would just feel it on the steering wheel

I had a similar problem on the Polo once, I was told the rim was bent...as it turned out the problem disappeared with a new tyre.

Can be that on the tires there are bumps(bubbles) ?, my 2 front tires kept on shaking at 100-120km/h, did the balancing, but no change. I tried again at another place and the guy told me that there are bubbles (bumps) on the inside of my tires. You could feel the bumps. I changed the tire to the back and you don't feel the shudder anymore.

My Tyres are brand new Johann so I'm thinking its possibly prop shaft, I'm getting checked tomorrow and will report back.

I personally will never use SupaQuick for any tyre related issues again. Had a problem on two of my vehicles where I would have a vibration at higher speeds. Took it to Supaquick more than once to do balancing and highspeed balancing. Eventually I took the vehicles to Tiger Wheel and Tyre and problems sorted on the first go.

OK so here's the update. Took vehicle to SAJCO in Randburg this morning. Prop shaft is poked apparently. Center bearing and both universals are shot. :o: so its been an expensive morning prior to the long weekend away in KNP. At least I know the issue now. Vehicle is on 277000km so it was probably due for new universals anyway.

thanks for the feedback ...you guys were spot on!

Hi Guys.
My opinion is if you just changed tyres and the problem has started its balancing for sure.If you just raised the suspension then its too high it could be the propshaft but that would be continous from a low speed.Lets not forget alignment as well as castor angles.
I got a guy who sorts these issues out if you need but hes in jhb does all my work.

Hi Darrl
Please send me your guys details. You have a valid point my tyres are 6 months old and the vibration is a new issue, The prob I have now is that the vibration is not 100% gone  so now I need to start looking at other things and checking the wheel balancing etc again.

When last have you replaced your shocks? I also had a slight imbalance with new tyres which was sorted when I replaced the shocks. The shocks wear more in a very small range of movement so feel ok going around corners and over speed bumps but is still too worn in that very narrow band.

Then I agree with Darrell. It must be the tyres. Hope you get it sorted!

Ok so here is the latest update. Took vehicle to Bridgestone head office in isando. They inspected tyres, 3 out of 4 were out of round and they replaced all 4. Must say they gave me excellent service with no quibble! I'm impressed! Can't say the same for Supaquick, they never came back to me with my complaint. They promised to get hold of the rep and give me a time and place to come back. Supaquick represents the Bridgestone brand but if I were Bridgestone I would look for a new ambassador.

Had the same issue with my Bridgestone Duelers :( Bridgestone replaced one and took half a day to balance 2 of the 3 remaining tyres! Worst was that even the new tyre they gave me had to be replaced immediately as it was also out of round! After that it was always a mission of note to balance those two tyres :( Will not buy them again.

Heard of several other people that had the same exprience!

I went for the new General Grabbers and they are excellent in all respects and no out of round issues at all!
