TWIN SU ON A 4Y

Post by Tinman »

high this is the continuation from the "blown head gasket symptons" topic where we found out it was also carby problems
i had an awsome idea once while i was supose to be listening to someone.
Twin Su carbies of an 1100cc mini on a 4y (2200cc ish)
the two would bolt into a plenum chamber which would bolt into the original manifold
i have one Su off a 1100 mini now i just need an identical one.
the one i have is a 1.5''.
if this works it will be a one of a kind meen looking and sounding beast.
and with some british simplicity and reliablity thrown in.
If any one out there can see a problem other than linkages let me know

yeah the more i think about it the more i cnat wait
i probably wont be able to do anything for about 4 weeks due to some end of year examenations
after that 10 weeks of lux driving and lux modding
so any ideas for an 85 single cab with a 4y and flat bed tray are welcome

SU's dont have a float or chamber so you wont get flooding on inclines

yep, another reason why there a great carby, personally a better alternative to webbers.
ill just use dome filters till i come up with a practical idea for using the stock filter so as to fit
a snorkle later on.

I had a set of SU's on my beetle with a Nissan A14 engine many years ago. Nice carbs but they are not the most economical option but as Daryl said they are well suited for off-roading.

BTW, If you look at the topic title quickly without reading the words it almost looks Chinese

yeah i see ur point about the topic name
due to my brothers having minis as there car of choice i have the best Mini mechanic in WA as a source of help, however syncronising shouldnt be to much of a problem because of our "revolutionary" intake idea. both bolting into the same plenum which then bolts into the original maifold, this way the fual/air mixes from both are mixed as they enter the original manifold.
see genious

The increase fuel iseage isnt to much of a problem because here it is free to convert your car to run on lpg which is $.7 p/L compared to oldschool petrol at $1.70
but what is good is you still keep all the perol system so you theroreticaly get just under twice the normal driving range. and heeps better reliablity with lpg.

Thanks, it's very interesting "foreign stuff" :Geek:

ummmmm i have no idea what altitude just that im up in the hills.
the octane varies i tend to run it on the ordianry stuff not sure what octane level it is , but its a few cents cheaper. and here theres no lead ie "unleaded petrol"
also when i say free to convert to lpg i meen the government gives a 3k rebate to anyone who does it and most conversions cost 3k or less sometimes you can make money off it!!!

ja, everywhere in the world the government subsidizing the move the LPG... just this backward country has still to wake up and smell the petrol fumes...

From what I read LPG has slightly higher at +-110 compared to the 95 of unleaded. So if you use it in high compression engines, you really see the savings, due to the fact that you loose about 15% of power , and therefore consumption, with LPG.

Last time if filled up beginning to the month, and cost me R6.50 / liter. Oke told me it might come down to R5.50.. have not gone back yet, not because my lux is super economical (one can dream), but just not had the time to use the lux to go fishing... government put me under house arrest most weekends

theres now a new lpg system where there is guarenteed less than 2% powerloss
its some vapor one, thats the one im going to get installed, costs slightly more but worth it in the long run
whats also good is you can offer to have a decal of the company on the side of your car and they do it cheaper

ok the lux is in my workshop now so i can work on here at night once i have done all my other work.
unfotuantly i ran out of time to call up and enquire as to the second carby, so that will have have 2 wait till monday, not sure they might be open on saturdays ill try calling tomorrow anyway.
iv got my old niki carby working enough to move the car round used a bit of wire to hold the choke on 2 start it till it got warm, once warm she runs ok but a bit ruff.
nuthin 2 SU's wont solve.

ok i spoke to the mechanic that does all my brothers mini's and he recons put a 34adf webber on, hes done it before and recons it would be infantly superior. :(
oh well it sounded lik a good idea, if i get another SU cheap enough ill give it ago but i wont bother spending 2much ill just get the webber, they come with adaptor plates and everything.
if anyone out there does this or knows of the twin SU on the 4y please let me know.
