Hilux Coilspring conversion

Post by Toyrover »

Hi everyone.

I have a V8 Mk1 Hilux and wondered if anyone has ever converter one to coils?
For the front. Ive been looking at Mk5 front coilovers. Radius arms from bottom of axle going off to the rear
Has anyone used the Pitman arm bracket on top of the diff housing for a third link?

Rear. Disco Coils (need to carry a ton) radius arms. Centre mounted top link and Panhard.

Cheers

Hi Paul. Some pics would be useful as there could be some differences between our models and yours. Coils can be done on the front solid axle, not easy but more than doable. :winkx:

Marius, I think he wants to throw out the leaf packs and go with coils only (for smoother, softer ride and better articulation). Maybe a 3 link or with control arms and panhard / track bar. :winkx:

Cheers Marius That's one clean chassis!!

Think Ill give mine a touch of paint before I take Photos! Think our weather in the UK isnt good for 34 year old Japanese Metal

I got all excited when I saw them springs Cos that is sort of what I have in mind but Mud dog is right I also want the links, panhard and to dump the leafs. The configuration of mine is exactly that in the photo though. As we both drive on the proper side of the road.

Toyrover, if I were to do a mod like yours I would try and copy an existing vehicles setup, maybe a 80 Series Land Cruiser.

Knuppel, who did the conversion on your vehicle and what coil overs did you use?

The extreme offroad guys should be able to help..I've seen link setups on SFA's. If memory serves, Scorpion has such a setup in his SFA.

Yep just looked at some photos of the land cruiser. very similar set up to Landrover. I am a little concerned about bump steer as mine has the draglink steering and uses the pitman arm to negate bumpsteer... Kruppel. Have you photos?

Cheers

Thanks Knuppel, I will contact them.

Toyrover, I will be looking at using my blade pack to position the axle and give it maximum flex while the coils will be tasked with the firmness of the suspension. I think this is a safer option to avoid death wobble and the like.

Blade pack = leaf pack, i.e. leaf springs like you already have. I think what Willie means is to leave the leaf spring packs but to assist them with coil over shocks for heavier loads. :winkx:

This is what I meant yes.. Take out the leafs/blades that do the hard work and keep the leafs that locate the axle.. Then add coils for the dampening you require and the fabrication is halved.. Sure, a complete 3/4 link suspension will give you maximum flex, but will also be a headache with different pit-man arms and the like to be calculated to get the setup stable.

Attached photo is of a Jeep on a leaf spring setup..
