Electric Vehicles

Post by pietpetoors »

Are there any programs in South Africa for getting electric vehicles on the road?

I see so many countries where they already have charging stations, etc but seems like nothing is happening in SA?

There is one city in Taiwan where all the public transport busses are now converted to electric busses.

There are various electric car manufacturers in China building and selling electric cars and you hardly every see a petrol scooter in China, they are now mostly electric.

Tesla is selling electric cars in many countries and there are many charging stations in the USA.

I see now even in Beijing they started building charging stations:

Optimal Energy here in Cape Town developed the Joule model... but alas no investors came to the party and the whole project fell flat.

There are kits available to convert cars to electric
Some of them simply use the motor of an electric forklift.
I considered it before but so far most of them can only reach 80km/h

As for the Eskom and charging station problem, also see

HOPELIK sal ons ook eendag daar kom .....

DIT is hoe dit hier werk :
- hoeveel m2 (virekante meter) het ons ?
- okay, hoeveel kantore\winkels kan ons bou ??
- Oooo, ons moet parkering verskaf ? ! :slap:

Germany plans push for more charging stations
.............
The news organization cited a paper published by the German Transport Ministry, which said that motorway services operator Tank & Rast will install DC fast chargers at its 400 sites by 2017, with the government covering part of the construction costs.

The German government has announced a goal of putting a million plug-in vehicles on the country’s roads by the end of the decade. However, unlike neighboring France and Holland, Germany currently offers little in the way of incentives.

The country has only about 100 DC fast chargers and about 4,800 Level 2 charging stations, according to the Transport Ministry...............

Kansas City Power & Light to install 1,000 charging stations
Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) has announced plans to install and operate more than 1,000 EV charging stations in the Kansas City region, which the company says will be the largest charging station installation by an electric utility in the US.

Can't remember where, but some time back I saw pics of PV panelling that didn't even look like PV panels - now if they were to use that stuff as exterior 'skins' on the bonnet, roof and boot lid of an electric vehicle, they would have less charging requirements and their range would also be slightly extended, replacing some charge as you drive, and it doesn't have to look unattractive either. I'm sure this must have been done already .......

Ja, the PV might charge a bit slow to extend range while driving, but think of somebody who commute to work and his vehicle stands in the sun for 8 hours of the day. That is enough time to add some charge.

Sadly Eskom is killing us on that front as mentioned, but late last year I had the opportunity to drive a Nissan Leaf, it's the weirdest thing to experience as theres no sound from the "engine" as we're accustomed to and acceleration was unbeievable, well at least to me, cos other guy had a Subaru WRX, granted it's fast but the leaf made it to around 160km/h. Biggest downside is the range, something under 300 km per charge, upside is the motor has a life expectancy of 10 years.

Another upside is no more services every 10k km.

For people just going to work and back every day 300km is very good.

I can even drive to Cape Town and back on 300km. OK, I will just make it, 290km round trip. But I can of course give it a fresh charge while visiting the CPT branch.

yes, EV's are the future.
As always good ZumaLand is stuck in the past...

Anyhow, I got in contact with a guy from Brackenfell / Durbanville who converted this bantam bakkie to EV for about R35K. Granted he can only do about 80km on charge, and go max 80kph, but that exactly what i would need for work and back. I do 50km round trip each day.
He has solar panel to charge it while at home, and thus no need for eskom either. That man driving around for free.

Recently i read an article about some university in Japan / China developing a battery that will be 80% charge in like 2 min. Granted they aiming at cell market, nothing wrong with the technology being applied to EV's. But that is prob still few years away... and for SA, a few decades.

Shaakir check this out, this bus can do 300Km on a charge.
While several companies are building electric city transit buses, China-based BYD has unveiled what it calls the world’s first electric over-the-road coach bus. The BYD C9 is a two-axle, 40-foot two-axle coach with a seating capacity of 47, top speed of 62.5 mph and range of over 190 miles.
....
The C9 uses BYD’s in-wheel drive axle with two 180 kW brushless AC synchronous motors, each of which develops 1,500 N·m (1,106 lb-ft) of torque. The 365 kWh Li-ion iron phosphate battery pack can accept 200 kW charging, for a charging time of less than two hours. BYD projects that battery capacity will remain above 80% after 12 years of use.

Japan has more EV charge stations than petrol stations.
(And RSA do not have one charging station)
Worried about finding a place to plug in your EV? You needn’t be, at least if you live in Japan – Nissan recently made the surprising announcement that the number of power points in Japan has passed 40,000, more than the 34,000 gas stations in the country.

BMW, Nissan to expand SA green cars plug-in network
Cape Town - BMW and Nissan's South Africa units will build a national grid for electric and hybrid cars to expand sales of vehicles that could reduce pollution in the country.

The two companies will roll out fast-charging stations from now until 2017 which BMW and Nissan cars can use to power up. Nissan introduced its all-electric Leaf in South Africa in 2013, while BMW launched its i3 and i8 models in March.

Consumers would charge all-electric cars such as Nissan's Leaf by plugging into an outlet, while hybrid versions such as BMW's i8, also has a gasoline engine.

The firms said although South Africa is experiencing severe power supply shortages, their plans would not be affected.

Eskom has been forced to frequently curtail electricity to residents and businesses in a bid to preserve the national power grid.

"It is not expected that the country's power crisis will affect this initiative in any way. The companies are also exploring renewable energy sources to power their charging grid," said Nissan spokeswoman, Veralda Schmidt.

Battery-powered cars have failed to live up to their initial hype globally, with drivers put off by the slow roll out of recharging stations, and limited range - despite generous sales incentives in some markets.

Because the batteries, cabling and cooling systems for electric cars cost more than a conventional combustion engine, electric vehicles have struggled to gain widespread acceptance among price-sensitive customers, particularly if the same model is available cheaper with a more conventional power train.

Some electric cars require lengthy charging, reducing their attractiveness for customers planning to drive longer distances frequently.

BMW and Nissan said their national network of stations where vehicles can charge their batteries will also include smaller vehicle chargers using alternating current in some regions.

"In order for the introduction and expansion of electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to be successful in this market, we need to work together," Tim Abbott, managing director of BMW South Africa said in a statement.

i don't get why EV manufacturers boast about all these figures. By the nature of the beast EV will always outpower the combustion engine without to much effort.

In the immortal worsd of Shania... that don't impress me much... give me a car that can do 150km at 120kph on single charge, for around R150K... now we talking advancement that benefit human kind. Not the nissan leave blowing in at new hilux prices.

Norway considers gas-powered car ban by 2025

https://chargedevs.com/newswire/norway- ... n-by-2025/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Norwegian government is considering a measure that would ban the sale of gas-powered cars by the year 2025.

The newspaper Dagens Næringsliv recently reported that the country’s four largest political parties had agreed to enact the ban, but Aftenposten later clarified that the measure is still under discussion, and that the two right-leaning parties have not yet agreed.

Norway is a major oil exporter, but has also taken substantial steps to phase out fossil fuels, including offering a generous package of incentives for EV adoption. Plug-in vehicles already make up around 24 percent of the country’s new car market.

Norway seems like a likely candidate to be the first country to go electric, but it isn’t the first to discuss an ICE ban. India’s Power Minister recently proposed a scheme to electrify the country’s fleet by 2030. The Netherlands has pledged to make all new passenger vehicles sales electric by 2050, and lawmakers recently put forth a proposal to move the target date up to 2025.

Watched an episode of the 2016 Isle of Man TT.

They now have a class for the electric bikes.

Okay, only three bikes on speed at the moment.

The petrol bikes are pushing 200 miles per hour, and an average of 130+ mp/h along that winding mountain pass.

The electric bikes are topping out at 180mph !!! And the average speed was lower this year than last year, at "only" 118mph. That is a 190km/h along that winding mountain pass and through the towns !!

EARY to see that speed and only hear the wine of the chain drive ....

whit that range (and speed) these would be PERFECT commuters, even for the distances we cover in SA.

finally an electric "car" that I can get excited about :celebrate: :siffler:

I see that Chris posted while I was typing the post below - he touches on exactly what I wanted to say .....

They're great, but I've got one big hang-up with electric bikes - no exhaust note!

Besides the fact that the sound of a 4-into-one just resonates with some primal area of my brain and can give me the chills, I love the fact that other road users can hear me in their proximity. I always ride with both the headlamp and the yellow fog-lamp on so that I will be more readily noticed, but sometimes even that doesn't help. The hooter often alerts but momentarily de-clutching to rev the motor always commands attention.

Just some six weeks or so back, I was narrowly taken out by some bloke pulling out just meters in front of me from a roadside parking with the intent of making a u-turn. I was just leisurely cruising along in top gear at a mere 40kmph, the motor was running at a little above idle and the exhaust note was very subdued. He hadn't noticed me in his side mirror despite me having the lights on. Thankfully his intention was a u-turn and that he had waited for oncoming traffic to be clear because I needed most of the oncoming lane to avoid collision. The miss was by about 25mm as I watched my left leg passing his front fender / bumper in what seemed like slow motion - I was both surprised and relieved, sure in my mind that we were going to connect.

When the exhaust is vocal I notice how other motorists glance in my direction or into their mirrors and I know I've been seen. :winkx:

0-100 Km/h in 1.5 sec :shock2:

http://www.gizmag.com/grimsel-ev-acceleration/44002/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Instant electric torque means warp-drive acceleration from standstill, allowing family cars to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) faster than a McLaren F1. Couple that accelerative potential with determined students, and it's not hard to guess what happens next. A team based out of Switzerland has just shattered the acceleration record for EVs, hitting 100 km/h in a staggering 1.513 seconds.

The Formula Student Team from Academic Motorsports Association Zürich's (AMZ) little EV weighs just 168 kg (370 lb), and is powered by four 37-kW (50-hp) hub motors. Total system torque is a scarcely believable 1,630 Nm (1,202 lb-ft), put to the road using traction control and a torque vectoring system.

This staggering torque output punted Grimsel to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 1.513 seconds, comfortably knocking the University of Stuttgart's previous best of 1.779 seconds from the top-step of the podium after they took the record from AMZ in 2014.

The car needed just 30 m (98 ft) of runway to reach the milestone and beat the previous record on its first attempt, before refinements to its traction control system helped it reach its fastest time.

AMZ achieved its record time at a military airfield in Dübendorf, with experts watching to make sure it met all the relevant Guinness World Record guidelines.

The torque of EV's is really amazing, but with a 50hp electric motor on each wheel one can imagine how it's possible with traction control. Awesome stuff.

the traction control is the real technological breakthrough.

Mathematically the slip of the tire limits the possible acceleration. This is further complicated by the weight shift that means the possible torque-transfer per wheel changes during the acceleration process ....

for a "car" the gear shift causes shudders which makes these record times impossible.

beating the record is no longer about brute power. But rather HOW you get that power to the tar.

the next evolution would be to fine tune adaptive airodynamics - high downforce at low speeds, with drag (downforce) reduction as the speed increases .... the real wizzards will be able to further tune this in accordance with prevailing winds - with different settings for the two-way runs ......

THIS is where the electronics makes the difference.

Gravity, and the friction co-efficient of the tire to tar is what limits the G-force. Exceed the available grip, and the wheels spin - THUS you NEED the airodynamics to kick in as quick as possible to increase the available grip.

Will punch the numbers later to see the average acceleration.

HA... but can it drive on sand :D:

Those hub motors is very interesting though. I have read about it many moons ago, but never thought it was being researched intensively. I thought we still tied to the whole drive train, single motor thought.

Which is more efficient ?? hub motors / single motor with gearbox and diffs?

Hub motors would be serious contender for traction control, ground clearance etc. BUT, does the gearbox offer more efficiency on road?

remember every moving part absorbs energy and is prone to wear and tear.
Direct drive is less moving parts and less energy wastage, better weight distribution and lower centre of gravity. Imagine that weight on each wheel how difficult it will be to lift that wheel off the ground while cornering.

By the same token, the downfall is the amount of un-sprung weight - this will equate to a far less smoother ride. I also feel that the road-holding on rough / uneven surfaces will be compromised.

Remember that when a wheel encounters a bump, the ground doesn't give way - the wheel is forced upward no matter how heavy the wheel assembly is. The suspension and shock take up that recoil and the heavier the wheel assembly (unsprung weight) the more momentum will be transferred into the body (thus the rougher ride). That same upward momentum will be more inclined to lift the wheel off the road surface, unless the suspension is very stiff, which would mean even less ride comfort. They obviously have to reach a compromise between those factors, but there's no getting away from the laws of physics.

Siemens 260 kW electric aircraft motor makes first public flight

Siemens researchers have developed a new type of electric motor that delivers a continuous output of about 260 kW and weighs 50 kg. The new drive system, designed for a joint project of Siemens and Airbus to develop electrified aircraft, recently made its maiden flight in an Extra 330LE aerobatic airplane.

“This day will change aviation,” said Frank Anton, Siemens’ head of eAircraft. “This is the first time that an electric aircraft in the quarter-megawatt performance class has flown.” The Extra 330LE, which weighs about 1,000 kg, is particularly well suited to serve as a flying test bed for the new propulsion system.

Siemens and Airbus plan to use the new motor as a basis for developing regional airliners powered by hybrid propulsion systems. “By 2030, we expect to see initial aircraft with up to 100 passengers and a range of around 1,000 kilometers,” said Anton.

So auto pilot wasn't on in the Tesla crash
https://chargedevs.com/newswire/tesla-a ... l-x-crash/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A Tesla spokesperson released a play-by-play description of the incident:

We got access to the logs. Data from the vehicle shows that Autosteer was not engaged at the time of this collision. Prior to the collision, Autosteer was in use periodically throughout the approximately 50-minute trip. The most recent such use ended when, approximately 40 seconds prior to the collision, the vehicle did not detect the driver’s hands on the wheel and began a rapidly escalating set of visual and audible alerts to ensure the driver took proper control. When the driver failed to respond to 15 seconds of visual warnings and audible tones, Autosteer began a graceful abort procedure in which the music is muted, the vehicle begins to slow and the driver is instructed both visually and audibly to place their hands on the wheel. Approximately 11 seconds prior to the collision, the driver responded and regained control by holding the steering wheel, applying leftward torque to turn it, and pressing the accelerator pedal to 42%. Over 10 seconds and approximately 300m later and while under manual steering control, the driver drifted out of the lane, collided with a barrier, overcorrected, crossed both lanes of the highway, struck a median barrier, and rolled the vehicle.

Good to hear that it was not a system error, and although no less tragic an incident, will still create some negative perceptions.
It almost sounds as if the driver was nodding off or in physical distress - I did not see anything that would indicate intoxication.

I remember an earlier article that he was playing a computer game while the car was driving ....

in any event, this certainly WILL impact on the future of this technology. We now KNOW that it is not (yet) a vehicle that takes you from A to B without handing back the controls ... which begs the question why did it hand the controls back ? If it "knew" there was danger why did it not slow down earlier in self drive mode ?

Maybe only have self drive at legal speeds, and only exceed the speed limits while the drivers hands are on the steering wheel ....

Reminds me of one of the older Top Gear episodes there Jeremy in his unique way talked about the programming of these cars and how one day it would have to decide between driving over a dog or a pedestrian.

A bit off topic, but an interesting view expressed (all within the realm of current possibility) in a mail that I received today .....

Worth thinking about.

In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide.
Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they got bankrupt.
What happened to Kodak will happen in a lot of industries in the next 10 year - and most people don't see it coming.
Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you would never take pictures on paper film again?
Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore's law.
So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a long time, before it became way superior and got mainstream in only a few short years.

It will now happen with Artificial Intelligence, health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs. Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Welcome to the Exponential Age.

Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years.

Uber is just a software tool, they don't own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world.
Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don't own any properties.

Artificial Intelligence: Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world.
This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world, 10 years earlier than expected.

In the US, young lawyers already don't get jobs. Because of IBM Watson, you can get legal advice (so far for more or less basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans.
So if you study law, stop immediately. There will be 90% less lawyers in the future, only specialists will remain.

Watson already helps nurses diagnosing cancer, 4 time more accurate than human nurses. Facebook now has a pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans. By 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans.

Autonomous cars: By 2018 the first self-driving cars will appear for the public. Around 2020, the complete industry will start to be disrupted. You don't want to own a car any more. You will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will not need to park it, you only pay for the driven distance and can be productive while driving. Our kids will never get a driver's license and will never own a car. It will change the cities, because we will need 90-95% less cars for that. We can transform former parking space into parks. 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide. We now have one accident every 100,000 km, with autonomous driving that will drop to one accident in 10 million km. That will save a million life’s each year.
Most car companies might become bankrupt. Traditional car companies try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car, while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build a computer on wheels. I spoke to a lot of engineers from Volkswagen and Audi; they are completely terrified of Tesla.

Insurance companies will have massive trouble because without accidents, the insurance will become 100x cheaper.
Their car insurance business model will disappear.

Real estate will change. Because if you can work while you commute, people will move further away to live in a more beautiful neighborhood.

Electric cars will become mainstream by 2020. Cities will be less noisy because all cars will run on electric.

Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean: Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can only now see the impact. Last year, more solar energy was installed worldwide than fossil. The price for solar will drop so much that all coal companies will be out of business by 2025.

With cheap electricity comes cheap and abundant water. Desalination now only needs 2kWh per cubic meter. We don't have scarce water in most places, we only have scarce drinking water. Imagine what will be possible if anyone can have as much clean water as he wants, for nearly no cost.

Health: The Tricorder X price will be announced this year. There will be companies who will build a medical device (called the "Tricorder" from Star Trek) that works with your phone, which takes your retina scan, you blood sample and you breath into it. It then analyses 54 biomarkers that will identify nearly any disease. It will be cheap, so in a few years everyone on this planet will have access to world class medicine, nearly for free.

3D printing: The price of the cheapest 3D printer came down from $18,000 to $400 within 10 years.
In the same time, it became 100 times faster.
All major shoe companies started 3D printing shoes. Spare airplane parts are already 3D printed in remote airports. The space station now has a printer that eliminates the need for the large amount of spare parts they used to have in the past.
At the end of this year, new smartphones will have 3D scanning possibilities. You can then 3D scan your feet and print your perfect shoe at home. In China, they already 3D printed a complete 6-story office building. By 2027, 10% of everything that's being produced will be 3D printed.

Business opportunities: If you think of a niche you want to go in, ask yourself: "in the future, do you think we will have that?" and if the answer is yes, how can you make that happen sooner? If it doesn't work with your phone, forget the idea.

And any idea designed for success in the 20th century is doomed in to failure in the 21st century.
Work: 70-80% of jobs will disappear in the next 20 years.
There will be a lot of new jobs, but it is not clear if there will be enough new jobs in such a small time.

Agriculture: There will be a $100 agricultural robot in the future. Farmers in 3rd world countries can then become managers of their field instead of working all days on their fields. Aeroponics will need much less water.
The first petri dish produced veal is now available and will be cheaper than cow produced veal by 2018. Right now, 30% of all agricultural surfaces is used for cows.
Imagine if we don't need that space any more.

There are several startups who will bring insect protein to the market shortly. It contains more protein than meat. It will be labeled as "alternative protein source" (because most people still reject the idea of eating insects).

There is an app called "moodies" which can already tell in which mood you are. By 2020 there will be apps that can tell by your facial expressions if you are lying.
Imagine a political debate where it's being displayed when they are telling the truth and when not.

Bitcoin will become mainstream this year and might even become the default reserve currency.

Longevity: Right now, the average life span increases by 3 months per year. Four years ago, the life span used to be 79 years, now it's 80 years. The increase itself is increasing and by 2036, there will be more than one year increase per year. So we all might live for a long, long time, probably way more than 100.

Education: The cheapest smartphones are already at $10 in Africa and Asia. By 2020, 70% of all humans will own a smartphone. That means, everyone has the same access to world class education. Every child can use Khan academy for everything a child learns at school in First World countries. We have already released our software in Indonesia and will release it in Arabic, Suaheli and Chinese this Summer, because I see an enormous potential. We will give the English app for free, so that children in Africa can become fluent in English within half a year.......
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Very true
What is scary is that all the technology do not make people smarter.
We have a growing society with smart phones and stupid people. TV and smart technology takes away the human's privilege to use his brain.

Also think, 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide, auto drive cars will stop this.
Life expectancy will rise, even more people.
Jobs will be lost because of smarter computers.

No wonder the whole world is at war. Scientists focus on global warming, but over population is in my opinion a much bigger problem and technology is making the problem bigger.

Andy this may be more ON topic than off-topic, as the electric car is but a small part of the new era.

And yes, there is a LOT of truth an that email article. BUT, there is already a world wide resistance building up to the new global village. BREXIT is just the first clearly visible step of a population that has enough of the global village and that wants "self determination". I admire the centiment, but do believe it is too little too late for Britain.

Look at Gamkaskloof (Die H3L). It was only in the late 60's that the first road was buildt into this kloof. In less than one generation the entire population has left the idilic kloof for the glitter of the city lights .... What we know with our brain and what we want with our harts have always been in conflict.

EDIT - The first farmer, Petrus Swanepoel, in this kloof dates back to 1830. For 132 years the kloof remained a closed community, until the access road was completed in 1962. It took 29 years for all the farmers to leave the kloof ! So what promised new options in 1962 meant the total demise of more than a century worth of family family farms ... Change DO happen, and often much faster than what we would like to believe.

There are however some constants through the ages - tax being one of the biggest constants !

International shopping, advertising, currency etc all undermine the tax base of countries. Each and every 1st world country have lodged some action against the large corporates in the last few years as their tax base is eroded daily. There is currently some 5 different "anti-trust" law suits against Google in Europe. With these companies declaring billions in profit each year, and countries loosing out on tax expect a clamp down, sooner rather than later.

Uber, AirBnB, etc certainly sounds good today ... It is already documented that an Uber driver "must" drive 15 hours per day to make his quota, now that is NOT in accordance with any labour laws. And hiding behind "it is an app" will only last so long. AirBnB is currently exposing private home owners to insurance risks they cant even begin to fathom !! Not one single private home complies with the requirements of a B&B !! Today each bedroom must have a 60 minute fire rating in any place that sells sleeping space .... Imagine the law suit when sombody burns to death in such a fire. and dont be to hasty to dismiss this concept - 2014/15 saw R2 billion worth of fire damage in South Africa, with 112 fire deaths in FORMAL dwellings, 238 deaths in informal dwellings. The private person making a few rands from AirB&B does not begin to comprehend the risks involved. There certainly is a lot of expensive school fees to be paid for this e-industry to reach maturity .....

Electricity .... maybe the story holds true for the 1st world. But TIA (this is africa) !! Today we dont have loadshedding - PRIMARLY because we still sell 10% LESS power than when we had loadshedding !!!! Our generation capacity has not increased significantly, if at all, during this time ...

If the industry picks up in 2017 SA wont have the electrical capacity, and we are back to load shedding. So how are we going power all these electric cars. YES, it may well happen !! But it will take many many years for Africa to catch up ....

As for solar replacing coal power stations .... not until industry comes up a radically different battery design. Remember that in Europe they have enough water to make use of large hydro systems to store solar power during the day and then regain that power at night. Not an option for us. That said, sad we keep on following Euro trends when we HAVE vast sea currents that beg to be tapped for electrical generation .... high time we take the lead in new technology - let's not forget, Tesla IS a SA invention !! The world is full of radically new inventions from SA. Pitty we so often export our ideas for other countries to make the money from, but then that is also a worldwide concept.

As for water scarce and desalination .... if it was half as easy as this article portrays it then Windhoek would not be having such severe water restrictions that Coke had to shut its operations in Windhoek.

And then the patently obvious problem - with 70-80% of people loosing their jobs ... who would have money to subsidize this electronic revolution ? As always their will have to be some balance ....

O, as for the insurance getting cheaper ... NOPE. A very light fender bender (tap from the back) on a new Passat, and the park distance units controlling the adaptive cruise control results in a R 130 000 worth of damage. If the knock was slightly harder and the computer in the back sustained damage that would have been an additional R 160 000 ! As long as we have normal cars on the roads these electronic cars will be VERY expensive to repair and they WILL get damaged !! And sadly the best car is as accident prone as the rust bucket it shares the road with - or as safe as the lady in the new A3 that "brakes too late" and rams the new Passat with all the safety gadgets ...

In conclusion, YES we are heading this way, but when we will get there is the question. Is this "kloof" going to be empty in 29 years ??

Olie re-generate soos bloed in jou liggaam soos wanneer jy bloed skenk.

Happens often here in Norway. Firepeople can't do much against this fire.
In a lot of parking garages it is not allowed to parl a Electric vehicle, because of fire danger.
If they start burning it is HOT, and the firemen can only watch them burn.

Besides: in summer I see a lot of Tesla's driving around but in wintertime I never see them.
It has two reasons: the batteries are very quick empty when it is cold. Don't forget that there is no otto or diesel engine which give heat. So there is no waisting heat to heat up the cabine. So to heat up the cabine they need electricity too.
The other reason is that dispide the antislip and other things the car is difficult to handle on snow.

There is a long way to go before the electric cars are useable. For now it is one big lie.

Cool, so Cape Town will be taking the lead and they partnered with a good company. One of China's leading electric car and bus manufacturers.

http://ewn.co.za/2016/10/24/City-of-CT- ... ered-buses" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
CAPE TOWN - Ten electric-powered buses will be added to the MyCiTi bus fleet by June next year.

The City of Cape Town has awarded a R126 million tender to BYD SA Company for the provision of the buses that will be assembled locally.

The announcement came in the run-up to the International Day of Climate Action being celebrated today.

The City of Cape Town says the addition of 10 new electric-powered buses will not only reduce its carbon footprint, but will also create local jobs.

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille's spokesperson Zara Nicholson says the rollout of electric buses is in line with the City’s commitments made at COP21 to reduce its carbon emissions.

“We are expanding the MyCiti bus network across the city and we also have the responsibility to protect the environment.”

BYD SA Company will also provide charging stations, technical support and training for bus drivers.
The City says this project is also in line with its goals to expand public transport infrastructure, in a bid to reduce the number of vehicles on local roads.

There was an insert on the news last week ... something about the Western Cape being the "green capital" of SA.

Bear in mind that there IS already a "factory" in Atlantis for the "manufacturing" of turbine blades ... bit of an eye blind .... these are imported, then "basic test" to comply with local content .... cheapest way to sidestep import duties .... That facility is few years old now, to date not a single item manufactured there, despite people showing up for work each day .....

Of course the gas turbines forms part of the green capital talks .... but still no progress in the gas pipeline ....

SO MUCH progress, still mostly "talk" ....

we can only hope they one day DO put some of these plans into action..... real action, not just a tax dodge eyeblind show ....
