Preferred replacement engine for sfa 22r engine
hi guys
I'm a new club member. I joined because i heard that this is the best forum to seek advise.
I understand that the advice on this forum has been tried and tested.
i would like to replace my 2.4 LTD 22R engine with an engine that is more powerful, economical and easy to fit with little or no modifications. I hear people are talking about the 2.8 and 3.0 cresside engines or a 2-jz or 7-mgte or lexus v8. I want to tour alot and im not in favour of a lexus v8 please share your oppinuons

Or, if you want to stay loyal to a Toyota engine, one of the guys on the forum is busy with a SFA with a KZT-E engine in.

I have a WL 2.5 TDi and its AMAZING....
If you don't want to change gear ratios then run 33'' tyres.
I run 120km at 3500rpm with STANDARD gear ratio but I have 33'tyres.....
I have had my SFA up to 160km with out any problems....

Or look at the Isuzu 4jb1t 2.8 diesel. Very reliable motor and lighter on diesel than the Mazda WL. Also now that the Chinese use the exact motor in the JMC bakkies spares should be easy to come by for a long time.

Re: Preferred replacement engine for sfa 22r engine
I am also considering the swap from 22r to Diesel. (WL seems to be the obvious choice)
What would a realistic cost estimate be for 1. Having it done by a pro, and 2. in part form if I do the install myself?
Is 33" tyres realistic on a SFA to negate the change of gear ratios, or would that open a new can of worms in the form of undue wear and tear in other departments? Would A body lift be needed to accommodate the larger tyres?
I am currently on 31x10.5x15's but would need new tyres soon anyways.
Would economy be better on the WL compared to the 22R? I seem to remember my 2.5 XLT Supercab not being the king of frugal either...

Re: Preferred replacement engine for sfa 22r engine
I would stick to the 22R...(Ok I put an EFi system on mine) with the conqueror trailer I'm getting 7km/l...and I'm going 100-120km/h. Some okes are talking 8km/l on D4D's with similar trailers.
Lexus is very nice but tricky sometimes and way too much power for the drive train, 7M too old already IMO and 3RZ bit expensive for what you get, same with KZTE. Question is how much you want to spend on that power and slightly better consumption?
If I had to change, I'd go for the V6 4.0 or the Prado motor, but least effort is the WL from what I've heard although I would not want to start mixing brands (that's just me)

Re: Preferred replacement engine for sfa 22r engine
Question is: What do you want to do with your truck and how often?
If it is an occasional(weekend) toy, no engine swop will be financially justifyable. Have a bit of patience, pay the fuel(which will be way less than an engine conversion) and enjoy your truck!

Hi all. Would any of you recommend a different engine swap for the 22R now that it is 2023. Has anything new come on the market that would be a better conversion? This was a 2016 post. Or would you stick to your original recommendations?

Whatever you do stick with a Toyota engine. 7M motors are still bullet proof as are the 1uz. Some guys have put the kzte in as well. Lots of info here on installation.

I'd say stick with the 22R, gasflow the head, add a branch and freeflow and you can see around 110-120kw. Will still give around 6-7km/l but way more power.selwyn schaefer wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 11:49 am Hi all. Would any of you recommend a different engine swap for the 22R now that it is 2023. I would say the 4.0 V6 Hilux motor, but with the whole drive train...and therein lies the challenge.
Otherwise keep the Txfer case and maybe change the local SFA diff for SFA imports, one could fit chromoly shafts in the imports.

Jaaaaaa...but before you see, you have spent north of R100k and still have a 30 year old vehicle. And then there might be issues down the line with too much power
