1985 tailgate strikeplates
Anybody know where I might be able to pick up left and right strike plates (point where tailgate handle closes onto... They sit inside the load-box) for an '85 model hilux?
I haven't been able to track them down any spares places in Cape Town. Toyota has one, left strike plate, which they have quoted me R490 on

Re: 1985 tailgate strikeplates
If you can manage to find someone with an 85 maybe speak nicely to them and have there's copied and and machined

Awesome suggestion I think I'll spend the rest of my week stalking other hilux owner's load boxes with my phone and measuring tapeObelix and Dogmatix wrote:If you can manage to find someone with an 85 maybe speak nicely to them and have there's copied and and machined

I might have some for you. I've removed my tailgate and have a full door canopy on. Take a pic so I know what I'm digging for in the Empire of Junk under the workbench
Happy trails

Re: 1985 tailgate strikeplates
Hey Nic that is great news! I've been driving around looking for a hilux that would have the same tailgate striker plates but unfortunately haven't found one yet- so no photograph to send you right now.
The attached pic is just where I'm guessing it is fixed to the load-bed.

It will be this old shape .....
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: 1985 tailgate strikeplates
That's a '88 / '91 loadbody. The clip is the easiest thing in the world to make up with a couple of pieces of 20 x 5mm flat bar. Basically it's just a flat section with two holes that bolt onto the body and a ½ curled end.
Make up both sections (slightly longer than required) with the curls so that you are satisfied they are gripping well enough to the latches. Once you have them latching properly, hold them into position to mark the holes (8mm IIRC) - just drill the holes 2mm tighter towards the curl - trim off the excess behind the holes and round off the edges so that they don't hook on anything that you may load up, - red oxide u-coat and spray / paint black and fit.
Walla!!

Sounds like I'd be able to make those actually, thanks for that. I really would like to have a picture of them though, so it looks more or less like the original.
