Baboons Pass 2023

Post by Tristin »

A pass I've always had on the bucket list but never committed too until this year. A couple of our members joined with the amatola off road club to complete. This pass is definitely not for the faint hearted and held up to its name until the very end. Pass took 2 days to complete, with many casualties on tires and bodywork.Word was this was the worst it has ever been by some of the guys that had done it several times.
Thought I'll share some pictures of this magnificent pass and some of the old HILUX

Good one Tristin, happy that you enjoyed it! This was always on my bucket list too but I have unfortunately had to abandon the list of wants.

Wow, that looks incredible. As in scary :shock2:
Are there reports on condition one can refer to? Who looks after the track I wonder?

Evening gents the track hadn't been driven in over a year according to a local. The track had been washed away abit and deviated in some areas where it was impossible to fit a vehicle.
I put on a brand new set of general grabbers 31x10.5x15 about 3 weeks before the trip. The grabbers held up extremely well in my opinion and was the common tire choice among the group.I recommended if you have place for a secound spare tire I would take it with.
One of the vehicles cut 3 brand new tires and not to name shame but Bridgestones sidewalls are really thin.

I see the 2nd last pic is of an old KZ hilux, but looks like it has been modified, with possibly a top mount inter cooler and air scoop.
Whose vehicle is this and cN unshare with us what mods have been done to the engine.
Is it perhaps a D4D transplant?

Hi there Wayne it is my hilux
It is the kzte motor with top mount intercooler with a D4D 4 pod scoop.it has been chipped and tuned with a straight threw exhaust and hopefully soon have a new high flow turbo.

Sounds like a nice modification. How does it drive compared to a stock standard kzte hilux?

Evening Wayne
To be very honest I haven't driven another kzte to compare. I tend to compare it to the D4D,but saying that the gearing doesn't allow it to be a fair.
