Is this the way it should be??
I have a 2009 S/C 3.0 D4D 4X4 and had 2 Pajero's before this one also 4X4 but the Hilux do something the others did not. When I drive in 4X4 High Range and turn into a corner at low speed like when I want to park it is jumping as if the Diff Lock is on and it is not it also feels like the hand brake is on because if I leave the petrol pedal it just stops this is strange.
Is this correct or is something else wrong?

This will happen on tar or any surface where traction is good as the center diff is locked when 4H or 4L is selected on the Hilux - Not good for the vehicle.

I use it in the rain because the back is so light and it tend to spin out should I rather not?

Re: Is this the way it should be??
You put a while lot of strain on the drive train because of the fact that the front and rear axles get "locked" together when you engage 4wd. Unlike a permanent 4wd vehicle the Hilux does not have a center diff.falcon wrote:I use it in the rain because the back is so light and it tend to spin out should I rather not?

Agreed, rather load something heavy (a sandbag) in the loadbin to weigh it down or drive with a lighter right foot.DieBul wrote:Id say rather not ,this can become an expensive excersise.

Riaan, jy moet nooit daai bakkie op teer, nat of droog, in 4x4 ry nie. Jy gaan hom breek!

Re: Is this the way it should be??
Riaan, listen to the guys here ... in a turn the front wheels travel on a wider arc than the back which means that the distance travelled differs. If you engage 4x4 you're locking front and back wheels to drive at the same speed. In a straight line, no prob but in a turn ... axle windup! A loose surface is forgiving and the wheels slip easily enough, but on tar somethings going to have to give and if it's not the tyres, it'll be a diff that strips or a half-shaft that snaps. Either way it'll be an expensive repair.
Some vehicle manufacturers used to employ a LSD (limited slip diff) on the drive wheels to overcome wheel spin on pull off, and improve drive traction in the wet. It seems that this is not so popular anymore because of the extra cost, but I think the bigger engined BMW's still have it. LSD's are still available as aftermarket upgrades on most vehicles, unless you already have difflock ... don't think you can have a combination of both.

If you selected 4HLC on the Pajero you would experience the same. Remember the Pajero is about the only 4wd vehicle that can be driben in 4wd and 2wd on tar. Normally vehicles with a centre diff does not have a 2wd option and vehicles with 2wd dont have a centre diff
