Langebaan area discussed on 50/50

Post by Niel »

Pieter, I see there is a lot of controversy re: the port (further development) and the people of Langebaan area that oppose the idea....

Are you aware of any groups lobbying against the port expansion plans ..... :?:

I am....
jeesh imagine draining tons of sand out of the bay..... and chucking it into another.
I think this govern really has their priorities twisted.
At strandfontein pool, there is a notice that one cannot pump prawn there. But one day we saw a film being made there, and they dug half the pool sand out... just because you foreign and you have cash you can do as you pls with our resources.

Can you imagine the effects the tides will have digging up all that sand. Already the houses in langebaan have to be protected by rocks and sandbags because their current operations is messing up the natural flow of the tides.

And they running the risk of losing their RAMSA status... like the interviewee said, we already embarrassed this country by losing this, and being blacklisted at orange river mouth - and langebaan is heading that way to cause there is no action plan in place. Jeesh, with all these idiots in power, this country is going down the drain, straight into langebaan lagoon.

but i'm sure mother nature can only take so much.
I sometime see this barge on the lagoon sucking up sand for the mussels at the bottom, and dumping the sand back overboard.

Jeesh, what kind of untold damage does this do to the mussel beds, which feeds the hoards of fish living in that lagoon.

ANd yet they moan about us driving on the beahc. Man, in couple of hours, those tracks are washed away by tides.

Langebaan is a really special place for me. It's where the bug bit where I caught my first fish, and it's still the only place where one is 99% assured of catching somehting. It's last of the edens. I have written numeorus emails to DEAT to make the bag limit of the stumpnose half of what it is currently, and to up the size limit my 10cm. I have often seen the carnage there where guys take home bags of fish.

ROn,

Have you ever fished the spreeuwalle. I heard alot of good stories about it.
But could never find someone with local knowledge.

Would like to try the area before portnet scoops up all the sand

Sorry Shaakir, I've never caught a fish in my life. The company I ran in Walvis Bay had a fishing competition every year which I was barred from, because as soon as I pitched up on the beach all the fish cleared off. I was only allowed to present the prizes.

I think this is the barge that clear up the alien mussel species.
Here is a nice article on the subject
I see Pieter is also there

Hi Niel, I see I missed out on the discussion. I was away for a couple of days.

There are a lot of things going on in the Langebaan area and the polution has been a problem for very long. The problem is that some people just do what they want. I think by bringing it out in the open like on 50/50 it might help to force them to do something about it.

You could not be more right.
In my quest to move back to bo-kaap, where I grew up, I wrote over 500 emails to government fo find a piece of land there. On piece was a little odd shaped plot that belonged to Dept public works.
I wetn to see the man in charge, and after spending about 30min telling him how important the area is as historical muslim heritage - like having the oldest mosque in southern africa, he told me , they have to put it on open tender. to which I replied , he knows that foreigners will scoop it up with their dollars and the people of the area would stand no chance, ... he told me straight to my face, they don't care about heritage of the area, it's the bottom line that matters. Money is the root of all evil could not be more the case as in SA.
