Hey guys,

i'm trying to get some more power out of my 2.8 3l engine. Is there a supercharger i can put on. Or just point me in the right direction.............if there is one.

Thanks.

Hi Paul,

I'm not sure what options are available in NZ, but here in SA, Toyota had a so called 'OEM' turbo conversion for the 2.8D... the kits were done by a company called Alpine Conversions(IIRC). Unfortunately these 2.8TD were very unreliable, more often than not they blew head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads. In fact, to date, I have only seen one of these TD engines in running condition! Moral of the story is that the 2.8D was never designed for super/turbo charging. If you really need more power, while maintaining reliability, maybe you could look at a KZTE(or newer D4D) conversion. Otherwise it's best to make peace with the reliable power of the 2.8D and enjoy the view!

Paul, I'd not mess with that engine. They do not like to be pushed hard and were never designed for that. You will 100% kill the engine.

Hi Paul, I also would not consider the turbo/supercharger route. Altough I've seen some very interesting turbo conversions for the 3L on Youtube. I'll try and find it, and post a link for you.

The only way toe get a "bit" more power would be to gasflow the head, but in SA it's just too expensive, for the power increase to be justified. The last option is just to fit a snorkel. Altough there has been so many discussions if it's true or not, on my 95' SFA, it did wonders. The reason being, that on a normal aspirated diesel, the "ram-air-effect" is felt more clearly. Let's be honest, that the power is so little standard that an 1% increase makes a big difference. I had a speed increase from, 110km/h to about 125-130km/h but my feul consumption is still 6.8km/l.

Thanks alot guys. In Barbados we have a serious problem with poor quality diesel. As a result alot of the newer engines have had problems. I'll try the snorkle though and see how that goes.
I fell off my bike and tore my pcl in my left knee, so using the clutch is challenging now. I'v heard there is a hydraulic throw out bearing that should make it easier, can you guys let me know where i can find one and a good aftermarket clutch as well.

Thanks,

Paul.

Still remember the Sun Rider ltd conversion 15" wheels and all.Was that what Alpine did ? It wasn't very fast but take offs were much nicer.

The D4D AND KZTE engine blocks is the same,so if you convert to KZ now,you can later go to D4D as the fuel improves. ........... how's that ?

Hi Paul,

In 1997 I bought a new 2.8.3L hilux it was sold & guaranteed by Toyota with an Alpine Turbo fitted as standard at that stage, I have found it to be a most reliable vehicle, it has been run on 50ppm fuel & oil & filter changes were pushed out to 10,000 Km from the original 5000. I did blow a head at 270,000 Km but it was my own fault towing a heavy caravan too fast & did not notice it had overheated. I have had 2 previous 4Y hilux's & have found this 3L with Turbo to be more economical, & far superior in power, by the way people in the know deem the 3L with mechanical pump & old style motor to be a most reliable workhorse & my experience after 14 years with it backs that up. One thing I was told was not to push it too far I.E. too much boost or intercooling. Dave brott

Hi and welcome

The clutch issue .
Go for the Howe throughout bearing
Much smoother than normal clutch fork slave , option .

They give the spacer etc with the kit .
