HILUX JEEP?

Post by diesel »

Hi.
I bought a Hilux Jeep. Well, sort of. It is a Jeep CJ2 fibreglass body mounted on a shortened Hilux 4x4 chassis. Would this qualify me to be a member of this forum?

I need some info on the vehicle as I do not have the documents yet and the guy who I bought it from does not know:

What year model Hilux 4x4s came out with the 21R engine?
Were these fitted with 4 or 5 speed gearboxes?
What is the spares availability on these?
Anybody know which insurance company will insure this vehicle a my insurance is not interested?

Any comments will be appreciated.

I unfortunately do not have a pic. It looks like Johan Kriel's Jeep but it is red with a white removable hardtop. I still have to figure out how to get it from Pretoria to East London. I thought about putting it on one of those car carriers - waiting for the quote.

Johan what engine do you have in your Jeep?

Send it down by rail .... just remove the radio / CD player if it has one along with toolkit / triangles / cigarette lighter etc. which you send insured parcel post. ;-)

Schalk

Now it has a 1C engine, very light on diesel but slightly under power, but for farm use, excellent. I bought it with a 18R engine, but had to replace it after many years, was too worn out.

Johan,

1C sounds like an option for fuel economy. How easy was it to fit? I believe the 18R and 21R have can use same bellhousing?

Anybody know what other diesels can replace a 21R without too much effort?

Andy,

Do you know where I can get more info on the rail transport? It will probably be cheaper than by truck.

I am not sure which bell housing was used, but the 18R just bolted on it. I use the same housing but bought a adapter plate for the 1C The engine mountings was modified a bit to make fit, and then obviously the fuel lines to change to diesel. It was a bit of work but not an issue, although it fits tide in the engine bay. The master cylinder we had to move also as the space was not enough to leave it in place. That was about 8 year ago.
The geabox and chassis is still std willys, with the Wagoneer trasfer case with the center drive shaft to match the hilux diff.

But next time I will fit a 2C, without the turbo, for the farm use. For other use the turbo would be good, I think.
