Clunking noise on rear of my hilux...Any Ideas???
Hi Guys,
I have this clunking noise on my Hilux. Its comming from the rear...
When I'm going over even the slightest bump in the road, I hear this noise, almost sounding like a loose tyre or shock bottoming out type noise. I have checked all the tyres (sparewheel also) and all is tight! Also checked the shock and is still tightened at both ends... Also check if it may be the loadbox loose on the chasis, but all seems in order. Had someone bounce the bakkie while I'm lying under it. Can hear the noise slightly when the bakkie is moving upwards in the bounce... Have anybody had something like this before??? Any ideas???
Thanks...

Hi Jaco
Did you raise the suspension at all?
Have you checked your leaf blades if its not catching on the clips?
Maybe the bushes on the shackles seizing on the pins?
Regards

Hi Darrell,
I did change to the camil suspension setup about 50000km ago, and the noise only started recently. The bakkie is in for a service at toyota today so I've asked them also to give it a once over....
I will check the leaf blades and the bushes on the shackles...
I hope I find the problem!!!

Re: Clunking noise on rear of my hilux...Any Ideas???
An unusual occurrence, but also a small possibility is that the shock stanchion has snapped off inside the shock .... looks OK from outside but can only be seen if the vehicle is jacked up and the broken side hangs lower, otherwise if the shock is removed and checked.

I have the same issue and hear it mostly when doing a "comma" at a stop street :) Or when going from one gear to the next, ussually lower gears.
Lux was at Allan at AEW who checked the universals and also went for a test drive, but as ussuall the sound then never happens : )

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your input so far...
The toyota guys had some bullsh.. story abbout the leaf springs unhooking at the front support???? Anyway whatever they meant or said they fixed didnt work. The noise is still there, so back to the drawing board!!!
Below a pic of my leaf setup, as darryl mentioned at the C-bracket the lafs are touching on the one side...I will try to re-allign the leaf springs.
As for the brake distribution thingey and the bushes at the shocks, all seems in order. However I will remove the shock to do proper inspection.

Is that the handbrake cable on the side? That setup looks totally foreign to me ..... :? Get rid of the coil-over shock and get some decent shocks.

Re: Clunking noise on rear of my hilux...Any Ideas???
Hi
I have the same problem on my Hilux. Knocking noise in the rear. When turning or going over a bump at a angle. straight line not noticeable.
Was this problem ever solved.
Hilux 2.7 IFS std leaf springs , coil front. No raise.
It did start to squeek earlier then i lubed up the shackles area and now we have a clunk?
Thanks

Re: Clunking noise on rear of my hilux...Any Ideas???
Wondering if it's not the shackle and spring hanger bushes / pins that are worn. Think this is where I would start, also check the clamps on the leaf packs that they aren't 'bent open' and that the U-bolts are properly torqued.

Just one other thing to check... have you properly tightened your spare wheel to the underside of your van?

Re: Clunking noise on rear of my hilux...Any Ideas???
The shock could rub against the leafspring pack. There should be a spacer on the bottom and top pin where the shocks fit, it should fit the side nearest to the chassis on the top and at the bottom in the inside, should be about 2-3mm spacer(thick washer).
2nd the front leafspring bush could be worn.
3rd the shocks bushes could be worn.
