heating system in the CAB
Hi guys
I tried searching the forum and can't find a thread to help fix my heater in the car! Man oh man it was cold this morning, but feet felt like the were gonna freeze off on the way to work this morning! I know i only live in Durban, but you must remember that we are not use to anything under 10 degrees!!
Anyways the long and short of it... the heater dial on the dash (89 SFA) does not move across into the red... the furtherst i can push it is in between hot and cold! I have open the bonnet and can see the little "switch" thing is obviously stuck.... tried carb cleaner and WD 40 not helping!
Can you get new ones... can you rehab this one! What are guys thoughts and experiences on this??
Thanks
CHRIS "Cold toes"!

Mine has since jammed up again. I have bought a new one but have not yet fitted it. Keep meaning to...

I have the golf one in mine at the moment but it works "backwards" compared to the toy one.Toybox wrote:IIRC a citi golf heater valve can be made to fit...
so I have to get out and open the bonnett and manually work the lever - I have sourced a good 2nd hand one and plan to fit that soon.
They jam up when there is not enough antifreeze in the system and the heater is not used regularly like at the coast

I cleaned mine up soaking it in brake fluid for 30 minutes, and then getting a good pair of pliers and un-jammed it, got all the junk and corrosion out. been working fine since then, around 2 years now. Just remember to wash it well and dry it before installing it again.

Here is the Hiace one. I cannot remember the price as I bought it longer than a year ago. It was definitely not over R300.00, but I can be wrong......

Thanks guys
Lollie I think I may take you up on that offer.... I will PM you!
Another freezing morning in traffic at a frosty 12 degrees! This coupled with the puddle at the drivers side foot well due to all the rain last week, means the toes are getting frost bite as it is like a slush puppy down there!
Funny my mate commented on the way to work... "You have got to love the tropics... when you have to open the window to let the warm air in!!"

Re: heating system in the CAB
hahaha ya its tough here in the tropics!
Here is a question... Is there a seperate pump that pumps the water into the heater sytem? currently the there is no water running into that pipe up to the valve? well not that i can feel? I have heard that you have to bleed it to get the air out that system... so will see what happens when i take the valve out tonight i will try bleed all the air out!
Anyone got a simple explanation on the system works, for me to understand better

Re: heating system in the CAB
The system uses exactly the same pump that circulates the water around the engine and through the radiator. The heater valve only allows hot water to circulate through the in cab heater, so although there is water in the pipe to the valve there won't be any circulation until the valve is opened.
Bleeding the system is as simple as setting the in dash control to hot, removing the radiator cap and allowing all the bubbles to surface through the cap.

Well unless the valve is open there wont be any circulation through the heater. It the hoses will be full of water but not going anywhere if that makes any sense.

1st price will to be to get the pipes and valve out and place inside my current braket! I can see hammer and chisel work in my future!
2nd would be to mount as is and repipe it!

Re: heating system in the CAB
Hi Guys
That same valve of mine gave problems. Changing on the dash from hot to cold and back didn't move the valve. I pulled the valve out halfway with my hand so that I can at least get halfway warm air when I turn the heater on. Very weird. Even though the valve stays on halfway open, putting it back to cold on the dash turns off the warm air . . .
But I think that the cable is snapped. How difficult is it to replace that cable?

Re: heating system in the CAB
That little blue cable is often the culprit as well ..... had the same hassle on my work bakkie ... cable snapped. Just manually opened the valve fully and leave it there. This means that there is always hot water circulating through the heater radiator ... (probably better for it), the heater control operated two cables ... that blue one and another that opens and shuts a flap in the air duct. Mine shuts off completely so no hot air comes through when in the 'cold' position. Works just fine for me. So all you need to do is bypass the valve and you'll have an operational heater.

Re: heating system in the CAB
Thanks guys for the help!
I managed to modifiy the venture heater valve from the scrap yard to fit into my old bracket! I just had to tap the brass fold over bits that keep the valve secured to the bracket! Put the new one in and cut the brass things to fit the bracket and bent them back into place!
Just a longer heater pipe to ensure there were no kinks and hey it works! Saved me from frostbite on Saturday after fishing on the beach down in Park Rynie in the wind and rain all day! (caught nothing)
Only thing is now the heat adjuster slides great all the way over to the red but only half way into the blue side! Any thoughts?

Re: heating system in the CAB
If it doesn't go all the way over then the air duct vent won't close off. The Lux valve had a spring mechanism at the valve to allow for further travel once the valve was closed ... does the Venture one have this also? Otherwise you could extend the control 'arm' of the valve which would give the cable more travel.

Re: heating system in the CAB
Yeah the actual Valve looks identical andy!
I am just not sure it has the same amount of movement as the Hilux has! If I can remember the venture had a smaller dash board unit that did not allow for as a big a movement as the lux!
I am tempted to take off the white end protector cap and (you can see it clearly in the photo of my lux original vavle) and see if that helps! The ventures did not come with a cap at all!

Re: heating system in the CAB
If you're sure that it's the valve that's restricting the movement, then it's quite possible that the Venture unit has less travel. Should''t really be too much of an issue as long as the vent flap in the air duct is opening to allow air in from the heater radiator.
