LED torch
I know there have been various postings about LED torches, but I really felt I should share this with you all. I got this 240 Lumen pocket torch from Pieter this past week. (The promptness and level of service was impeccable as usual!! )
Man oh man! Was I impressed with this little unit!! 240 Lumen might not sound like much, but emitted from a single bright LED and nicely concentrated, the beam stabs a hole through the dark. In full midday light the beam is still visible on a target at 2 meters ... in partial shade I can still pick it up at over 10 metres!! Another nice feature of the beam pattern is that while most of the beam is concentrated in a tight core, there is a gentle wider pool that illuminates at about 1 metre width at about 1 metre distance ...... ideal if you want to light your way in the dark.
The unit itself is sturdily constructed from aluminium and employs a single 3.7V Lithium-Ion battery rated at 3000 mAh, so weight is not excessive, yet it still has that reassuring feel of substantive quality and fits nicely into a trouser pocket. There are no rattles either if one shakes the unit. Battery life seems to be excellent ..... I used it quite a bit, testing it out, probably amounting to the equivalent of a continuous ½ hour of use. When I put it on the charger, it still showed a full battery! I doubt the unit can withstand submersion, but it is definitely splash-proof and IMO will stand up to the worst rainy conditions.
The switch control is conveniently fitted into the rear cap, like most of these type units and switching is smooth. One full click switches it on and off. When on, a half click reduces the the brightness by about half. A second half click reduces it even further to it's lowest intensity setting, but even this is more than sufficient for most applications and is still impressively bright in dark conditions. A 3rd half-click results in a bright strobe and a 4th half-click gives a continuous S.O.S. in Morse code. A last half-click returns the unit back to full brightness (continuous beam).
I took some pics at night. The first one was in my front yard that is illuminated with a 500W tennis-court floodlight. The camera compensated for the ambient light, but even with that floodlight, the beam pattern is much brighter and clearly visible, even the surrounding light pool and the path of the central core is visible over the floodlight. Distance to target was 25 m.
Just for interest, I pointed it skyward and the central core lit up a beam into what was a clear night, like a small military searchlight. (The torch and camera were both hand-held so the image is a little blurred.)
I took another pic in the back yard with no floodlight but which is dimly lit. Distance to target was about 15 m.
Will I recommend this product? Hell Yes!!
Thank you Pieter, I am absolutely thrilled with this torch!

Re: LED torch
Suddenly my current LED torch just seems so inadequate! Upgrades are so vital... aren't they? Ha... my present unit isn't rechargeable, so I must upgrade!
