Zulu time

I am finding this very interesting and thought I'd share. As we all know the world is devided into time zones, 24 if I'm not mistaken. Most of us operate on local time eg. we start work at 08:30 which is local time and would vary according to various time zones. The little bit of reading I've done also makes reference to "zero" time (GMT).

Certain international operations, however cannot work according to local time, for e.g. army operations, airport environment (flight plans ect.) and many others. And these would revolve around zulu time. Zulu is derived from "zero" time and the international alphabetical represantation for the letter z is zulu. By using zulu time everyone stays on the same hour and time destipe their time zone, in South Africa our zulu time is always 2 hrs behind local time, so as I write this post, the time now is 04:47 zulu, interesting I thought.

And if I were to speak to someone anywhere in the world and agree on time, they would have to set it according to their time zone by either adding or subtracting a certain number of hours from their local time, so that we're on the same hour.

And to add to this... Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a time system originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, which later became adopted as a global time standard
