Hi All,

Roscoe from Cape Town, I'm looking to purchase a Hilux for overlanding use. Any suggestions?

Carb or EFI?
Petrol or Diesel?
Price range to look for if kitted? & not?

Welcome Roscoe,difficult to answer,depends mainly on your budget.
There are many various combinations you can go with,rooftop tents ,trailer,how many in the family,at the end of the day i would buy a reliable vehicle first,petrol or diesel and build onto that.
Basic kitto look for,canopy,front and rear bumpers,and maybe an aftermarket suspension,then personalise from there

Howzit and welcome Roscoe.You will need to furnish a few details of your proposed overlanding trips.How many passengers will travell in the vehicle ? Where are you planning to travell to and for how long ? How often will you travell and what type of budget do you have ?There are so many options to choose from.

I'm looking to overland to Tanzania from Cape Town.
Passing through Bots, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania & back down through Mozambique.
I may have 2 other passengers. So a double cab is probably preferred.
Budget of around 150k for vehicle & accessories.

If you can wait this will be a very good buy.
Alternatively I would recommend a diesel.The price of diesel is a lot less cheaper in those countries.

Thanks for the heads up , how much did you sell it for & what do you reckon the value would be upon them returning?
Do you have a description of the kit perhaps? I can definitely wait if it is worth it.
I assume this is a petrol Hilux then? I am very unsure about the diesel or petrol issue as I hear so many conflicting stories.

A company called Brits (Britz?) also sell their kitted 4x4 vehicles after being in use for some time.

in the end they bought the lot for R110 000. That was the van (95k) and the other stuff was the RTT, roof rack, fridge, solar panel, extra spare wheel,extra jerry cans, some spares,compressor and a few camping equipment. I would make a offer around 100k for the lot.

The thing about the petrol and diesel is that you going to pay more for a diesel.So it probably works out much the same way. You can find petrol anywhere so thats not a problem.What hurt you a bit is that you pay anything from R15 a liter to R19 a liter and the diesel stays more or less the same as in SA.With the van fully loaded I struggled getting 7km per liter.The average was 6-6.5 km per litre.But if you get a bargain like this than you can cover the xtra cost easy peasy

Thanks for the info George, really appreciate it! I got in touch with Ewoud & we will continue talking about the vehicle. They say they have not experienced any issues since purchasing it. Let's hope that continues.

Thats good. I am seriously getting jealous of the van Looks Africa is going to be his home for a while.If you take it on its 3rd trip than you can just engage auto pilot.he will know the route

P.S. How much time do you think I should set aside for a trip like this?

i would say 3 - 4 months. We did the Western side of Tanzanie.Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria.That was really remote and Awsome.Also try and get to Selous

You can do it in 2.We just took it very easy and stayed sometimes a week at a place.You have a nice route dont shorten it.

The guy stays in St Helena Bay and works in Vredenburg, the vehicle is still in good condition
The 2.7 Hilux is one of the most reliable vehicles ever built

Called the guy, he is upgrading to a Prado that is why he is selling. Think with all them extras this is a very good price.

George, what was the mileage on your Hilux?

A fully kitted '93 Hilux 4y with rooftop, fridge, dual batt etc. is coming up for sale, PM me if you are interested

If you can believe the kilos it might be worth checking out. Price is high but if kilos and condition is real one might try and twist their arm.

Hi Guys,

I've been looking at the vehicle that Piet recommended & have been in contact with the owner.
I like it & think it is worth the price(???). One thing I'm not sure about is getting the motor checked out before I purchase.
I was going to send it for an inspection at the Dekra in Malmesbury but they don't do technical inspections.
The vehicle is located in St Helena Bay so makes it a little difficult in terms of logistics.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Whatever you decide to buy have it checked out by a reputable mechanic.
Fixing the drive train on any 4x4 is a costly exercise.

Rather spend a little more now on a good vehicle than a lot later on parts/labour in the middle of nowhere.

A full service history doesn't always mean the vehicle is mechanically sound.

Don't be hasty, a good buy will come your way.

Roscoe, there is a good mechanic in Vredenburg who used to work at Toyota. I will get his details for you tomorrow
The owner of that bakkie works in Vredenburg. Maybe you can ask him if he would be willing to take the vehicle to that specific mechanic for a check.

I found my Hilux & am off to pick her up in St. Helena Bay on Saturday !

Was about to tell you about the Hilux I had and saw you already got the perfect advice, man the Hilux is truly one amazing driving machine, took mine all over with no skill required, it does it all
Enjoy the trips!!!

I just came here to say I still have this Hilux, many thanks to Piet for spotting her and ThysDJ for teaching me how to drive her. She has changed her colours since. If you see me on the street, hoot! I am headed to Etosha and Caprivi next month again
