Lexus 4speed Auto gearbox problems

Post by Ali3n »

So about 4 weeks ago my surf decided not to change gear into 4th gear. It shifts perfectly from 1st to 3rd but not into 4th nor lock-up. Now after phoning around and getting many different possible causes I decided to start from the simplest and work my way down.

Drained the oil and put in new oil. Still no luck, Checked all the wiring and no luck, removed and tested and cleaned the speed sensors with no luck, checked and tested the crank position sensor and nope not that either.

So one evening I pulled the gbox sump and tested the solenoids and they seem to work. I then checked the sump and I found a lot of metal shavings.

The box runs perfectly, no scratching and or funny noises so I suspect that some of this metal has got into places where it should not have gone into and thus does not let it change to 4th. The box filter is clean and no metal.

Now my question is should I try and flush the gbox clean somehow and install the sump again and try or should I rather just replace the box?

What damage can there be?

To replace the box will not cost so much so I am not too concerned about that but don't want to unless I have to.

It's yours. It's been sitting in a box for ages. That said I hope it's still there!

I'll scratch tomorrow.

Don't like the sound of that at all! I think you're going to find something other than just the valve body :( .... hope I'm wrong!

Jip, thats my worry but these sumps have magnets at the bottom (Never seen that before)to remove these shavings so I am guessing that it does happen that there is shavings in there. But where do they come from is the big question.

Top gear is normally a "straight through" 1:1 ratio ..... in reality it's not really 'straight through' in the sense that there is no gearing involved. Usually there is a separate cluster at the back of the box that connects input and output shafts at the same speed (5th gear) and it's not unheard of (like we had a case just a week or two ago), where one of the retaining snap-rings gives in and 5th is lost. I hope it's just something simple like that in your case as well and that the metal bits are just from the chewed snap-ring.

Thanks. Hope so 2...

Must say that it has changed into 4th gear twice in the 4 or so weeks but as soon as you stop and pull away it doesn't which leads me to think that it might be something else wrong as it has changed.

That is very unfortunate!

A SMALL amount of shavings is acceptable and normal in a manual gearbox with many kilos.
However in an auto box this is a clear indication that something has gone wrong!

Hi Kornis,

I doub't that my vehicles VIN will help much as i replaced the original 2L-te motor, Auto box as well as ECU to that of a 1UZ-fe from a lexus thus do not have the donor vehicles VIN.
