Garmin vs Tomtom

Post by pietdevs »

My old trusted Garmin has reached the end of its life. I had a look at the new range of GPS's and want to hear what you guys have to say. What is best: New Garmin or Tomtom (both around R5k) Tomtom comes with life time updates and live traffic updates etc and they claim to have similar tracks as T4A from Garmin. What do I buy? Any input will be appreciated.

Would love to see their version of T4A .... THAT has been their major shortcoming.

I believe some people prefer TomTom for town use, and only keep their Garmin units for the bush.

Garmin,as far as I have it,it's only Garmin that is compatible with Base camp.

If you do route planing etc, on Base camp, you can transfer your route in to your Garmin, last I checked TomTom was more a town, suburban friendly gps, with maps of souther Africa.Back track etc I think is limited,so you are restricted.Buy Garmin and you are sorted,They also offer life time maps upgrades and as you know, your GPS also has its own life span before replacing.

Changed from Quest 2 to TOM TOM :surrender: and back again. I hardly use my TOM TOM and will replace it with a new Garmin soon.

Personally I think Garmin is a market leader, not only with their products but their after sales service is outstanding. I cannot comment much on TomTom.

I work with maps and GPS's everyday... For our offroad purposes there can be only one..... Garmin.... Tom-Tom is good for inner city, or even inter city travel, but not for offroad travel. It doesnt have a comparable T4A mapset, and that is a huge drawback. :silent:

If you want to buy a GPS for inner city travel you can save your money and use an Android phone and Google Maps.. Works just as well. As a matter of fact, I hardly ever use my Garmin for finding addresses in town, as it is always on T4A... I only use my Android phone.. Nice thing is, when you reach your destination it goes to StreetView and it shows you a picture of the building/house you are looking for...

My very first and only GPS unit I bought was a Garmin.
I chose it because of this forum.

Am very happy with it as it is easy to use

And as oom Thys says, Android for in the city on the phone.
