Towing capacity

SO now that i have a bakkie again i want to get a caravan.

What is the towing capacity of the isuzu 2003 kb300 d/c 4x4

according to http://www.um.co.za/specifications/i...282002%29.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it's towing capacity is 1250kg.
according to my registration papers the tare is 1900kg and GVM is 2650kg

from what i have been reading, most manufacturers in SA only allow 750kg?

It's a bit of a confusing story... Tare, GWM, GVM, Laden Mass, etc, etc, etc.

I just want to know what weight caravan i can pull with this bakkie. And what weight measurement do i look at for the caravan?
GWM, GVM, Laden Mass ???

what constitutes a braked caravan? i see many pics on gumtree with handbrake... is this braked?
if so can i go up to 1900kg?

I have just spoken to a Senior (Head of Traffic) regarding weights of code EB license, here is what he said, and confirmed by Snr State Prosecutors:

With a code EB you are allowed to drive a vehicle on SA roads where the vehicle's GVM is not exceedind 3500kg, you are allowed to to tow any size Caravan with a GVM not exceeding the Tarra of the tow vehicle.

The only trick, so to speak is, your tow vehicle have, on its vin plate, CVM Combined Vehicle Mass, printed (stamped) on it, in total you may not exceed that as stated as on your VIN Plate.

In short, a tow vehicle's GVM could be 1800kg and your van GVM is say 1200kg, but the tow vehicle's CVM is limited to 2400kg, then you are illegal. This is just an example to illistrate, you are thus exceeding the safe load as specified of the tow vehicle.

thanks rodney... it can get very technical... especially if you have extras on like canopy , arb bumpers, LR tanks, extra wheels

OK to break it down... you may not exceed the Combined Vehicle Mass.
On my vehicle details i have Gross combination Mass, which i assume is the same thing. This states 3900kg.

So way i understand it ,I have EB licence, my bakkie GVM 2650kg (maybe be bit more with LR tank) i can go up to 3900 - 2650 = 1250kg GVM caravan regardless if my Tarre is 1900kg.

So the fine print of 750kg unbraked does not come into play then?

HI Shakir,

Any unbraked trailer may not weigh more than 50% of the license (tarre mass) of your vehicle and it is limited to a maximum weight of 750kg irrespective if your vehicle weighs 2000kg or more empty.

The GCM on your Isuzu limits it to 1250 kg braked towing weight on any trailer/caravan. I know that the SFA's had a towrating of 1400 kg according to the vin plate with the different weights on it.

See my Prado has a Tarre weight of 1890 kg, thus I can safely and legally tow 750kg unbraked behind my vehicle. The GCM for my vehicle is 5750 kg which gives it a 2800 kg tow rating as the Maximum mass the vehicle itself can weigh is 2950 kg.

On the Other hand my SFA tip the scales empty @1480 kg thus I could only tow 740kg legally unbraked and 1400 kg braked as the GCM on the SFA is 3880 kg and the GVM on the SFA was 2840 kg.
