There has been much speculation about the imminent arrival of Volkswagen's first one-tonner and all that nail-biting appears to have paid off.
Images of what has been come to be known as the Robust have surfaced online ahead of its official unveiling at the International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover.
The four-seater double cab concept shown has been designed as a Search and Rescue vehicle complete with blue LEDs and tools that have been cleverly integrated into the load bay.
According to sources, the bakkie is not based on any existing vehicle platform and power will be sourced from the German manufacturer's latest range of common-rail turbodiesel engines.
In terms of design, the concept displays several design cues seen earlier on Scirocco and the Golf 6, particularly in the squared off tail light clusters.
Though still in concept form and bearing the very basic name, Pickup, the Toyota Hilux rival will apparently go into production in Argentina next year. This production model will be introduced in key markets, including South Africa, late in 2009.

I agree........VW's is for those that want to be different at a additional price with no benefits........Must admit the Argentina plant will make me wonder about built quality ect............Has anyone been to argentina...
Its never equal to a Hilux, and will have to be "abused" similar to the Hilux of BBC topgear to try and show its worth.....And I will say, it wont make it afterall that punishment.....

Were the Hilux not made and sold in Germany under the Volkswagen badge ?
I would imagine that they learned quite a bit with this venture.
Must admit that I like the truck, nice lines and not as flashy as the new Hilux.

I saw the test mule they used to test the new VW bakkie, it was disguised as a Hilux! The VW mule's panels just fitted too well, so I've got a sneaking suspicion that it is based on the Hilux platform, jokes aside.

But I'll bet it won't hold it's value like a lux.
brother-in-law recently sold his polo. full house , paid cahs for it, and got half what he paid back two yrs later. The he still went and bought a golf TDI - why I asked with tears in my eyes.

Glad I have an SFA HiLux, it is distinctive. Now a-days, when you see a double or single, you cannot easily identify it – they all look the same.

Toyota platkarre do not all hold their value any better. Even normal 2x4 Hiluxes, my friend bought a SWB lux and lost a bucket when he wanted to trade it in 18 months later. At this stage not many cars will maintain their value
