glue-ing Perspex ?

Post by ChrisF »

I need to glue two off 6mm layers of Perspex, to give me a 12mm "feeler gauge". Thus the glue should not add significant depth to the compound.

What glue would be best for this application ??

Not too worried if it causes some clouding.

Would PVC glue work ?

Must be getting older because for the love of all things dear, I cannot remember what it was that we used to use as kids when we made things like models, ant farms etc. I seem to recall that it actually softened the perspex, much as the PVC weld works with PVC.

Why not try it on a test piece? Acetone might do it as well, but again, you would have to test (will certainly cloud it).

We always dissolved some Perspex filings in Acetone. You can change the consistency by varying the percentage of mixture.

Theee best (if you could get hold of it) is chloroform with a watercolor type paint brush.

Otherwise cynoacrylate from a hobby shop, 3 grades of viscosity, S, M & T...super thin, medium & thick (or thin  )

I would say the medium one, for larger contact surfacesas it is slower to set. Rough the surfaces slightly with 1000 grit sandpaper.

Thanks gents.

Bought some acetone at the pharmacy.

Played with some test pieces ....

Best to sand the surface first.

Give the acetone some time to set ....

So now I have a chain with a couple of "feeler gauges". And with the extra block glued onto one feeler gauge it serves to measure two dimensions.

Tomorrow this unit will WORK .... no more guessing, the installation complies or it does not ....

so by the time the local authority comes for their inspection we will KNOW that the installation complies. This particular authority loves checking the dimensions and upsetting the apple cart ....

Chris, Chloroform is the thing to use! It creates a bond by "melting" the two pieces together rather than glueing.

Try a local pharmacy or this guy - Tertius 021 933 5545.

If you don't come right, get back to me as I can help but my stocks are in Jhb and will incur courier cost to get it to Bellville.

Methylene chloride is what my dad used in zillions of applictions.

And some other fancy pvc type glue(quite expensive) to build the perspex boxes that is being used in the UOFS medical department to showcase all the organs etc. Man, did we glue together zillions of those boxes...
