I'm just about to buy a machine after being diagnosed with severe sleep apnea.
Does anybody here use one?
My main concern right now is whether my aux batt kit will be up for it when we're away camping without 220 mains hook up!

Short answer - YES, the second battery DO last and your camping days are not over.

My wife had been observing me for a while and saying I stopped breathing in my sleep with frequency.
So I went to a specialist at Christian Barnard Hospital.
From an ECG he picked up strain on the right side of my heart which is classic sign of sleep apnea.
I was then sent to see a sleep specialist at same hospital and after a night hooked up to many sensors I was disgnosed with severe sleep apnea.

I pick up my machine this week, hope it works off my invertor for +/- 8hrs sleep in my tent!

Then use the CPAP at home via the inverter, and TEST your system :)

Then you will KNOW what you need when camping.

Should have asked sooner - a client of mine is the importer of these machine and I'm sure he would have done a good deal for you!

Yes , I even tested how long my duel battery would run my machine, I tested it over 5 nights without chargeing the battery,all good.
I did the Limpop kruger trip 2 months ago, running an extension cord from the van to the tent and all worked 100%.

There are other devices you can also look at (none of them cheap unfortunately)




None of them need power but still creates the positive pressure needed

Sterkte boet, you seem to be in the same boat i was in 10 years ago. Managed to get rid of the Apnea after two operations, (and a bit of weight loss also helped with the snoring) Have check out your tonsils mine was collapsing and blocking my airway which was my problem, ripped them out (and that is another story) and Sleep apnea gone.

Good luck with the adaption to sleeping with the CPAP machine but it will be worth it.

Sjoe! And here most of us take a peaceful night's sleep for granted! In fact we do that with our general health, just expecting everything to keep functioning as it should. This problem seems to be a lot more common than what I first imagined .... I wonder if this is something that has always been around but never picked up upon or if it's something that has only manifested in the last few decades as result of 'modern' lifestyles or planet pollution.

All the best with the adaptations to your daily (or rather nightly) lifestyle.

Ok got my machine and survived my 1st night on it!
Gotta say it's a little claustrophobic at first but I eventually managed to relax enough to drift off.
The following dc converter is available at R1,500 but I don't fancy having to lug my battery to my tent and back every day!
So the question is, will my inverter run for +/- 8 hrs without killing the battery?

Glad your "FIRST" night with your new "Girlfriend" went well. It also took me a while to get use to it but I am sure you feel the difference today

With an inverter you would still have to bring a cable into your tent. So why not just make up a twin-flex extension lead that you either clamp to your battery terminals or with a lighter socket.

I did think about that Mr Brandstetter, but that involves buying the dc converter and after just shelling R9.5k for the machine my credit card is crying!
Think this will be the inevitable route though as running my invertor all night is too much an ask.

In the meantime I have decided to name my new girlfriend Rita, Rita Resmed.

Richard How much power does the CPAP use ?

From other posts it use very LITTLE power. Thus you only need a very SMALL inverter.

I have two small inverters that you can borrow till that plastic card gets its shape back. Bring your CPAP machine to my house, and we can do a quick couple of tests ...


12V extention lead from the battery to where you sleep, then the inverter, then the CPAP, and then a peacefull nights sleep.

According to the destructions it has a 90w Power supply unit which operates at:
Dc output: 24v 3.75A
Av power consump: 53W (57VA)
Peak power consump: 104W (108VA)

Wow, that sounds pretty frugal.

My 800W Inverter to bolted to the side of my battery box so a smaller invertor would be the order of the day.

I'd certainly like to come and test it Chris before I camp again in the summer, thanks for the kind offer!!

In that case you don't need an inverter, get two smaller 12V batteries and hook them up in series, that can power the machine directly .

A lot less losses this way.

Hi.
I run an extension cord from my dual battery and inverter to my tent, it is a 106a deep cycle with a 500w multi wave inverter "buy a fixed wave if you want to run laptops" and I dont switch it off for the entire weekend. The fan on the inverter doesnt even kick in, the cpap machine uses hardly anything.

That's interesting Lorry, the fan on my 800w Inverter runs from the second you switch it on and not a pure Sin wave invertor but runs my dash mounted laptop just fine.
Maybe I will bring my battery box in one night and see if it'll go through thr night.
