I have been playing with the idea for a long time now.
My idea is to use a single cab and shorten it to fit a double cab bak onto it. Give it a nice lift and fit some 33" tyres and a new chinese 4y engine to power it all. Fit a aftermarket suspention .I would still want to use the standard hilux drive train.
Crazy idea or possible ?
My reasons for building this: It will be a mean offroader with the shorter wheelbase, it will look damn cool and will be a unique machine, it will be a nice hobby toy to play and tinker with.
Now,has anybody done this and what must I keep in mind when doing this?
Things I think I need to do are the following:
1 Cut chassis shorter.
2 Rear propshaft shortened
3 Move front axle to accomodate 33" tyres
4 Rear propshaft shortened and front lengthened
5 Spacers to lift body

Re: Short wheel base hilux 4x4
Entirely possible Simon. A lot of precision work, but it will be a mean challenge vehicle. Why only a 4y? If you are going to build something like that and you want to turn 33" tyres, wouldnt you want a few more horses under the bonnet? How about some Lexus V8 muscle? Something like this??

Also a better idea is to cut it shorter behind the back wheel and not to decrease the wheel base too much. The longer the wheel base the more stable but a stompgat helps with things like departure angle.

Re: Short wheel base hilux 4x4
Simon it is doable but its a lot of work
I drove some challenges in Jippo Guts and that was stil standard wheelbase , i prefer the longer wheelbase personnaly but on my next ride ill def shorten the bed to rite up to where the rear shackles sit
33"on a 4y - i must agree with the guys here - get some horsepower in there while your doing all this work

The older the Hilux the more fun it is!!
