Conversion from points and cond. to electronic ign. DONE !
I am considering converting my Ford V6 from points to electronic ignition using the
Pertronix Ignitor unit which fits inside the Bosch dizzy and maybe adding a new 40kV coil.
Has anybody done this, and is there any improvement in performance of the mechanical setup?

Re: Conversion from points and condensor to electronic ignition
I done it, cant really say I noticed a performance increace but it a hell of alot better than checking point gap all the time and its pretty waterproof aswell. Simple to install. You just need to reset your timing afterwards.

Re: Conversion from points and condensor to electronic ignition
I did it on my 4y 3 years ago and haven't felt an improvement in performance but my engine miss is gone and idling is much smoother.
Also what I found was that this is a great anti theft device. I had to leave my lux behind in a parking garage for a week, and I just removed the receiver from the rotor shaft. Any thief would have to tow the lux or bring his own points, condenser and feeler gauge or a new distributor and a timing light to "dief" my lux.
Furthermore YOU(even if you are a 5 thumbed database administrator like me)can install the unit in about 5 min, totally waterproof, no electronic boxes that will fail when wading(seen in more than one case) and you can convert back to the points system whenever you like.

Re: Conversion from points and condensor to electronic ignition
Got the ignitor today, but as is my luck, when I went to install it I found that the nuts to fasten it were not in the packet. This would not normally be a problem, but as this is made in the great USA, the nuts are 8/32".
So tomorrow the search begins to find 2 nuts locally :x

Re: Conversion from points and condensor to electronic ignition
So, I managed to find two nuts after scratching through a couple of old jars in my dads garage. Good thing he has kept stuff from 1950
Here goes
This is what you get when you order the Ignitor unit (plus two nuts hopefully, not shown :wth: )
You need to run a positive 12v wire from the coil positive (before the resistor) to the distributor to connect to the positve RED wire of the ignitor unit.
The negative wire that connected to the old points is connected to the negative BLACK wire of the ignitor unit.
Remove the distributor cap
Remove the rotor
Remove the points and condensor. (put them in your spares box in the Hilux just incase you ever need them)
Install the supplied base plate adaptor with the supplied countersunk screw.
Install the supplied magnetic trigger disc over the distributor shaft and press it down into position.
Install the Pertronix Ignitor unit onto the base plate with the two nuts supplied. Use some Loctite.
To be continued...

Re: Conversion from points and condensor to electronic ignition
Re-install the rotor and distributor cap and connect up the wiring
Re-connect the coil
Check all your connections then start the engine. It should idle ok.
Get your timing light and set the timing as per the workshop manual. In the case of the Ford V6, 14 deg BTDC.
I just got back from a test run, and the engine is idling much smoother and seems to run better using my butt dyno. Pushed it on the highway and it ran off the clock (160 or so... )
This was definitely worth the money :D

Hmmm, news is its still running after 4years with no problems. Great not having to adjust points again. Motor runs smoother than with points, but otherwise no real difference.

Busy fitting golf one fuel injection and converting the disy to electronic this should hopefully drop fuel consumption.

Golf one single injection bolts to the intake manifold and fits in place of the Webber 0nly the four bolt holes need to be enlarged to 8mm.
modify dissy to hole sensor make it six hole parts from golf dissy.Buy golf one TP100 harness +-R150+TP100 now connect up and the dissy will send the pulse to the MR Turbo(that what I've got) and the Mr Turbo will control the injector. Will send picks once start assembly.

Thats almost for free!
Do you expect the fuel consumption to come down?
