Dakar Cancelled
The organisers of the Dakar Rally, the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), have confirmed that the 2008 staging of the annual endurance event has been cancelled due to security threats to competitors.
In a statement the race organisers highlighted several concerns. "Based on the current international political tension and the murder of four French tourists [in Mauritania] on December 28 linked to a branch of Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb, but also and mainly the direct threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organisations, no other decision but the cancellation of the event could be taken.
These guys are beginning to control the world!

Re: Dakar Canelled
No not sissies.
No organiser of any event can put the participants and back-up teams at risk.
The fallout for them if something happens is of mega proportions.
One cannot blame their decision, but it sucks to think that we are all being held to ransom.

Re: Dakar Cancelled
This really is sad news. Was so looking forward to it.
I think logistically it would be impossible to re-route in 1 or 2 days.
Maybe if they postpone, but that would still take months for the organising.
In afrikaans se ons: "Liewer bang Jan, as dooie Jan."
The Dakar on it's own is very dangerous. So why run the risk of losing lives to terrorism!

Re: Dakar Cancelled
This is a MEGA race has been going for many years and the organisers are not a bunch of amateurs. A few years ago they had a similar problem, they hired a few Antonov transport aircraft to move everything and everyone to new location for a different route. What has now happened must be extremely serious bearing in mind that all of the competitors back-up crews, catering crews, news teams, etc, would already be there ready to go; there must be thousands directly involved with the Dakar.

I resent that last comment... and insist on an apology.

Re: Dakar Cancelled
No appology. Are we then splitting the reward money? Or should we wait longer and get them to pay more before we get him out of the hoe he is in "under my bed" split = 90% for me and 10% for you. I will deduct the money for all the WP and Stormers jerseys you wanted.
