SFA Power steering box

Post by sir shrek »

Help needed

Hi guys
I know this has been discussed briefly elsewhere but has anyone repaired or overhauled a sfa power steering box.
I took mine out today and want to strip it completely and give it a good overhaul.
I know about the cross IFS mod but dont want to go that route and a second hand box might be worse than mine.
Gemini will only have stock on their service kits in two weeks so I will only know then what the kit consist of.
Any help or advice please :scared2: :scared2: :scared2:

Claude those PS boxes are a can of worms once opened... be very careful when you open it... the main worm gear is packed in place by something like 30(IIRC) little steel balls... make sure you catch every one of them... missing one during re-assembly means your steering box is stuffed! Also re-installing the balls can be quite a painful experience... took me about 5(probably more, but after 5 I stopped counting) tries to work out how to do it effectively... the last of the balls must be put back in the U clamp... use some grease to keep them in place during refit... theres is a definite trick to it! Personally... next time I'll rather give it to a pro... too much PT and frustration for my liking!

If it's the balls that are worn, you can replace them... I found the right size at a place called BearingMan in CT... IIRC they are 5.5mm steel balls??

That pitman arm can be a b@st@rd to remove... I eventually gave up and took it to Allan Venter... he tried to press it out... tried heat treating it with a oxy welder... eventually he gave up and let one of his assistants have a go... they gave up... then I did this: put it in a vice, with the sides of the pitman arm spline resting on the top of the bench vice 'teeth'... with the shaft end pointing up... then place something protective at the top of the shaft and give it a klap with a hammer... I'm not saying this is the right way... but it worked for me!

I broke my puller last night trying to remove the pitman. Wil try a bigger one later in the week. Sprayed q20 on it to soak. hopefully it helps.

I tried a puller b4 taking it to Allan... didn't budge... the bench vice method works best... it needs some form of shock treatment to release!

I did donner it with a big hammer but my puller was to small so the threaded shaft bent. I hope that a bigger puller and a four pound willl do the trick.
THE BIGGER THE PROBLEM THE BIGGER THE HAMMER.I hope so

All the seals can be sourced from your local seal centre just remember that there is a teflon seal behind the oil seal on the output shaft that also needs replacing

Where can I get the teflon seal and do you perhaps have any part numbers.
Thanx for the input.

This link may be helpful... I'm not sure that all the seals are available from 3rd parties...

Claude... make 100% sure there's no play on the input shaft, or on the pitman arm shaft... else it's klaar!

The centre adjustment screw, the one with the nut locking it in place, it should stand about 2-3mm out off the top of the locknut... if not, and it's seated deeper(head below the top of the lock nut), then it's possible the box's worm gear is worn, or the screw has been overtightened leading to premature wear...

Did mine yesterday. The whole exercise took me about 7 hours, after also struggling with the pitman arm. Eventually had to remove the bracket from the chassis, as well as loosening the steering box from it before I could take everything out. The bench vice and a hammer did the trick on the pitman. Finished cleaning and assembling, but as soon as I took it for a test-drive I picket up a heavy leak on the adjustment screw. I then took Sunlight Soap (koekie), rubbed it in to stop the constant leaking. The sealer type washer on the adjustment screw was badly worn. I then used a normal washer and a matching size O-ring. Tightened the nut, and just out of frustration I also used Pratley Steel and covered the adjustment screw, as well as the lock nut.

Couldn't see any trace of leaks this morning after traveling to work. Will have a look again this afternoon when going home. Not a "lekka" job to be done, and lots of swearing (even the dogs and a passing airplane came under fire) :alvarin: :alvarin:

I ended up taking mine to a specialist in Sebenza who overhauled the box.
Definitely wont attempt to do it myself again
