Hilux DC 4x4 2.7i IFS Towing Capabilities?
Hi Everyone, I need some advice on the towing capabilities of the Hilux 2.7i IFS.
I need to tow a 2ton double axel trailer and 400kg on the back of the Hilux for 600km.
Will it be able to do this?
What speed can I expect? 80km/h?
And what fuel consumption? 5km/l?
Any comments on previous heavy towing experience will be appreciated.

Dries, should be fine.
5 sounds about right.
80-100km/h depending on terrain...uphill you'll go 60 but flat roads after a while you should reach 100km/h
I hauled 2.5t with my V6 over 650km at 110-120km/h and got 6km/l at pump.

The Hilux should do it.Just watch out for the stopping part. Just keep it in 4th gear and avoid any weigh bridge. You will be over the legal limit

They don't like uphills, otherwise it wont be a problem. You can do 100 km/h in 4th gear and can get between 5km/l and 6 km/l depending on the number of uphills.

Thanks Everyone, one last question. Would you recommend to increase the weight of the trailer and decrease the weight on the bakkie? Or visa versa? I believe weight on the bakkie will make the trailer more stable but will lift the nose?

I would put more weight on the vehicle. BUT it sounds like an unsafe and illegal load.

Hi Everyone, the trip went ok. Empty hilux with empty double axel at 120km/h gave 15.5l/100km. Trailer with about 1.7t and hilux with about 0.4t at 80-90km/h gave 15.5l/100km. I could reach 100km/h but the trailer started to sway at 100. I towed in 4th with ac and on some hills 3rd. But was impressed that the hilux could tow that load in 4th with ac and no heat problems.

The Hilux can do it easily but the Cops don't like it though, lol. I towed a Daimler Double Six from Pretoria to Cape Town (that was well overt 2.5tons) and although not fast, it was comfortable enough. You will easily be able to go faster but for safety, stick around the 80km/h mark (certainly no faster than 100km/h). Stay in 4th at most so as to save the box. You will also feel that going much faster that 80km/h also brings the revs up a bit and fuel consumption suffers more. I averaged about 5.5km/l overall.

That's no lie!pietpetoors wrote:Because it is a 2.7and no heat problems.
I just towed a heavy load in extreme heat conditions with my beloved 2.7i with aircon on all day in 3rd and 4th and boy o' boy what a vehicle! Slow, but so trustworthy and the sense of assurance that it will not break. The heat gauge never moved one bit from where it always register.

I've done numerous trips with even more than 2 ton loaded all the way to Pearly beach and back. Fuel consumption ave about 4,5km/l
