Convert Cast Iron Stove to Gas Fireplace
Anybody know where one can buy loose gas components in Cape Town?
I am looking for a burner like the one in the middle in the pic below.

There's a place on Lower Main Rd, Woodstock, on the left when going towards town. Naam escapes me, but has gas signs out front of shop.

Re: Gas components in Cape Town?
It was rather easy to convert. Tested it in the garage and it heats up nicely, will make some wooden pieces for the feet tomorrow so I can put it in the lounge.
Our house have no space where I can put a real fireplace. There is nowhere I can put in a chimney.
After last weekends cold whether I decided I must make another plan.
Most expensive part was the stove, because I was in a hurry, sure if I bargain hunt I can get it cheaper.
The stove is a "Falkirk No 6 Queen Anne"
Basically all I had to do is a drill one 45mm hole in the back of the stove with a holesaw.
Cut off the burner's brackets.
Fill the stove with volcanic rock
Connect the pipe, and I have a gas fireplace.
The picture below explains it all.
I find that if I close the chimney valve completely , the stove heats up better.
Oh ja and this week we will have to test gas consumption, that is the only unknown factor for now.

BRILJANT !!!!!
(is "toe" 100% toe?)
lees so bietjie op oor "flue less" gas fires. Daar is spesifieke maattreels vir ventilasie.
sien die een - http://firefox.co.za/Safety" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.cvo.co.uk/flueless-gas-fires ... omvent.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.heatwave.co.za/GasFireplaces.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Gas components in Cape Town?
Dankie sal daai more lees.

Re: Gas components in Cape Town?
"Flue less" gas stelsels is n "hot topic" vir die laaste 2 of 3 jaar. (pun intended)
Pieter daai groot staan gas-heaters.

Daai pyp buite is so lekker warm!

Re: Convert Cast Iron Stove to Gas Fireplace

Re: Convert Cast Iron Stove to Gas Fireplace
OK, first night test.
I am used to a normal gas heater.
This is not as effective as a normal gas heater, but it does heat up the room nicely. After heating up for about half an hour, the air coming out of the chimney is so hot you cannot hold your hand there for longer than 15 seconds.
I think there is lots of potential for using that hot air.

Re: Convert Cast Iron Stove to Gas Fireplace
I closed the flap in the chimney completely, thus blocking the chimney, and opened the two front sliding doors.
The logic is that hot air rises, it don't fall. So hot air rise in the chimney, escape at the end and then remain at ceiling level.
Now I block the chimney and force hot air to come out the front of the stove.
Can feel a great improvement. Much more heat coming out now.

Re: Convert Cast Iron Stove to Gas Fireplace
Pieter now here is a bit of theory that we do use in industry ....
USE your ceiling fan !!
In Summer you want the ceiling fan at high speed - the air flow over your body aids evaporation (sweating) thus cooling your body temperature.
in WINTER the fan should blow DOWNWARD, at a very low speed. Exactly to mix the layer of hot air trapped at the top of your double volume with the cold air below. This happens at SLOW speed for the fan.
Actually busy with an installation Paarl now where we use three of ceiling fans to ensure the aircon works correctly in a very large double volume area.

Re: Convert Cast Iron Stove to Gas Fireplace
Something went wrong when they built my house and I bought it like that. I can stand with my feet flat on the floor and touch the roof with my finger tips. So a ceiling fan wont work in our house.
But what you say makes perfect sense. I realized last night what a nice warm place the half a meter below the ceiling must be.

I have extractor fans in my lounge and then suck hot air from there and blow it to the bedrooms via 110mm sewage pipe. Just takes the cold nip from the bedroom before you go to bed.

Re: Convert Cast Iron Stove to Gas Fireplace
Pieter, I think an ordinary free standing fan pointed upwards on low speed will do the trick.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
