Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
well our plans are almost complete!!
and so thought would share!!
things can change along the way, however believe that we are pretty much on track!!
Motor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------R5100
Adapter -- not the cheapest, however believe the best option available ---------------------------------------- R3000
Flywheel -calling in some favors + balancing + case of beer + material -for the sake of having a number --R1000
Fuel Pump ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------R600
Fuel Pipes, incl surge tank (we making our own) --------------------------------------------------------------------R500
Power steering pipes (just an estimate)------------------------------------------------------------------------------R500
Air con Pipes (just an estimate)---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------R500
Water pipes (just an estimate) have seen the route that pipes have to go--------------------------------------R1000
Motor Mounts (most motors come with rubber mountings) just need to make the steel brackets-------------R400
Rev Counter Modification ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------R600
Exhaust Vehicle has dual 57mm, so just the downpipes to current system + cross over pipe-------------------R600
AirFilter ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------R1000
Dyno-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------R700
Radiator: have a 4 core radiator, however not happy with it------depending on option R1500 - R2900------R2900
Clutch: either a built up one, or a brand new one ------------------------------------MAX-------------------------R1100
--------------------------------- do have a kit that can be beefed up and prepared for less
ECU:----dont ask, dont tell---------------------------------complete-------------------------------------------------R3000
Service Motor Before Install ---have a contact for the spares, timing belt, seals, plugs, pulleys -------------R3000
---------------------------------oil, tensioner
Electric Fans: have a variety of fans at home -- just for this two fans-------------------------------------------R1000
TOTAL---------------------------------------------------------------------R26500
could of missed something, sure some of the few estimates could be too low, however some could be too high!!
am planning on fitting a Oil Pressure gouge, however do have one, and cant remember how much I paid
there is the cost of the Carport/workshop that I am busy building while the Cressida gets sold!!
so what have I left out!!

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
think me for got something
its either an Air Temp sensor or a Water Temp sensor
if its a Water Temp sensor that I need, have one, comes off the skyline that I had
if its a Air Temp sensor then will need to get that one!!
idle control Valve, there is a way around that one, have been told that by more then one reliable source, so wont be going with one!!
has been described as when I had the two 38s on, and with out the chokes, till it warms up!!
can live with that!!
think thats all!!

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
hi!!
its has been brought to my notice that even though I could, and can pull this off for well under 30k, that this is not the norm!!!
and so me could be misinforming others, witch is not my intension!!
if one adds the things that I have already, and the favors that me is calling in, then it could well be over 30k!!
hope this makes sense!!

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
Fernando, I agree with you and am sure one can do the conversion for about R30,000 or even less if you do it yourself.
The guys who cannot do it themselves have to pay for labour and "expertise" (hopefully in most cases)
So don't worry if some people get upset about you mentioning the cost.
I am sure anybody who would like to try it themselves can do it for that price, but I have also seen that most people battle to get it right and in the end it always cost more than what they originally budgeted on.

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
This may come asee a shock
Lexus V8 conversions, did not get done
And will not get done
Eventually when the V6 broke a piston skirt, decided again the conversion, was not in the mood for all the work
Build a great 3.4, with new pistons from Ford - believe it or not, it was the cheapest price
Did the heads myself, mild cam - sounds owsome
Pulls great, and so far no regrets
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkaH6gvuAfk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Have further managed to organize a EFI manifold for the 3.4 V6 out of a Sierra iRS
Still need a few items to complete that part
The V6 has around 1500km on the clock now, it hardly gets driven
What is to happen to the lexus V8 motor
Could end up in my Jeep grand cherokee

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
Fernando, I never were a fuel injected fan, I liked carbs, until I got my 2.7 Hilux.
If you have a proper fuel injection system it is just so much more hassle free and effective than a carb.
Me thinks once you got it sorted you wont be sorry.

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
Have sourced an original Ford V6 manifold that came out of the Sierra iRS
Have the fuel rails No injectors, however that is no issue
Have the throttle body, and a spare one
Then have the spares that won't be used for the lexus V8 into the bakkie
Surge tank
Fuel pump
Computer box - the guy who has done my tuning for over 20 years, prefers Dictator
Still need fuel pressure regulator

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
Would be interesting to see what new injectors cost compared to what new injectors for a Toyota cost.
I would love to put new injectors in my Hilux but at the price I rather pay the extra fuel.

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
Going with aftermarket injectors, as I believe they are all more or less the same size
Yes some flow more then others
Was told aroumd R600 each
So working on about R4000
Unless the Rand takes a dive again

Christo
Thanx for the links - they are great
Did you see what that 3.4 makes
From the mods that I have on my one, speculate that I should in the region 165kw+
So could be on the mark
My compression is 9.5:1 - a little lower - on original 1st oversized orig6for pistons
Mild cam from Lamco 745
Ported the heads self, although this was not the 1st set of cylinder heads I did myself, did this under the guidance of a local V6 guru - Sybie from Nitro Performance, we go back more then 20 years
Branches , Dual 63ms exhaust
The uprated motor, with the newest heads has much bigger valves
Have a manifold with two 38s that I have run before, however, chose to start it up with just the one 38, and will be doing the EFi once it's done a few thousand km, and then it will go on a dyno
It does pull very strong, haven't taken on anyone at the lights yet, however it does feel strong
My 3.4 uses the ford Con-Rods and ford original crank, not the home made version of it
Did not want to go too wild, as it's in a 4x4 that will be doing a lot of towing

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
You can make good power with the 3.4. I had plans to stroke a 3.0L Essex to 4.0l. Had most of the spares. When Ford bring the Ranger in 4.0L I lost interest in the project. Sybie is a Essex Wizard and if I am correct there is still a few drag records behind his name. That twin turbo Essex in the Escort moved.
In the good old days I had a serious modified Cortina bakkie. It was measured a true 200km/h. Still would have left most of the new generation bakkies behind.

What effect does a mild cam have on your torque?
I remember some of the guys who had modified cams in their Hilux engines complained that low down torque was sacrificed. Will it be the same on the V6?

Mild cams are nice for everyday and 4x4 use. Usually the cam profile stays the same with added lift.
I have the same problem with the Lexus v8 comparing it with Yankee v8`s. You do not have that low down grunt with a Lexus. At some stage we are going to change the Lexus cam profiles in our Lexus Hilux built.
We run cams with around 224 deg @ .050" lift on intake and 230 on exhaust with 15mm cam lift on most of our American powered 4x4`s. In all three the engines 400nm plus is available as low as 1500rpm

Self a few different answers herepietpetoors wrote:What effect does a mild cam have on your torque?

1. My one is a 3.4, witch is basically a stroker 3.0
A stroker motor always has more torque,
2. The 3.4 out the factory, had more torque at 1800rpm then the 3.0 had at 3000rpm
3. We don't do much of rock climbing and crawling and trails
We use of bakkie to tow(busy build a new trailer BIG)
So we need more torque at higher revs, when towing uphill
Being able to keep 100km/h towing is good - often squeeze it on the last bit of downhill to be able to carry some speed on the uphill
Old trailer loaded was around 1.7tons - new one, empty with ramps will be around 750kg
New trailer, will easily acomodate two Aygos on top of it
Then, still have plans to add batteries and a solar panel or two
So for us moving the torque band up the rev range and loosing a bit low down is no issue
Although, it feels fine driving around town

The lexus V8 has an almost flat torque curve, and produces more torque at 1000rpm, then the peak torque of a Ford V6
Stock for stock, self would take a lexus V8 compared to an American V8

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
Different strokes for different folkes.
We mos bought that Surf with the 1 UZ so we can experience the Lexus without stuffing up our own trokkies.
The Lexus was OK, was sounding lekker, pulled lekker and so on and was big fun driving. The Lexus box was ultra smooth, etc.
Once I got my Constantia going and took her for her first spin, it was like a WOW moment, unlike my first spin the the Surf. OK the Constantia is a Australian V8 (Holden 308) and a road car vs SUV, but still I prefer the low down torque and the sound. I am not very concerned about top speed, I hate revving an engine, 3500rpm is about max for me. I like the sound and I like acceleration.
Then again might be because a 1UZ is only 4 liter where the Holden 308 is 5 liter. Is huge difference. Then again Lexus was 22 years old the Holden 43 years old.
What I love about the Constantia is the simplicity. The Lexus had a harness running to the computer box as thick as my wife's arm. And the one day when the Lexus did not want to start I had no frieken clue as to where to start looking for da problem. The Constantia has 5 wires doing the same job.
For a 4x4 I like the Lexus because it is so much lighter than an American V8. You do not want much weight in the nose when going up a dune. Apparently the Lexus is lighter than my current 3RZ. But then again an American is more compact (60 degree vs 90 degree). I could not change the drivers side rear spark plug on the Lexus without loosening the engine mounting and lifting the engine.
I do not know what creates the WOW feeling, but that WOW feeling is much bigger inside me when I hear an American than a Lexus.
In the end it is like woman, we all have our own preferences and luckily we do not all like the same one (OK, depending on what she looks like )

No offense taken. We have tested them side by side no way a Lexus can match the low down grunt.kfxnando wrote:Please don't take offensegrips wrote:Mild cams are nice for everyday and 4x4 use. Usually the cam profile stays the same with added lift.

Testing torque you start a dice in third gear. Modified 302 with AFR heads hit 420nm @1600 rpm.
Lexus is a ceap start, expensive to modify. Yankee V8`s just have all that nice goodies from the shelf.
Ok have to say all three my Yankee v8`s have alu heads. Maybe if you take a smog killed v8 from the 80`s a Lexus will outperform it. Pre 70 before the emission stuff and v8`s built with bolt on stuff I am afraid the Lexus cannot keep up.
You will be amazed finding 60`s Ford 302`s pushing 300kw and doing 9000rpm.
The newest trend these days in 4x4`s is crate engines.
I know of three guys going that direction lately. They have taken supercharged 4.0l from Cruisers and 2JZ`S from a SFA Hilux and replaced them with LS7`s and LS3

Look at your 1st sentence
" Testing torque you start a dice in third gear. Modified 302 with AFR heads hit 420nm @1600 rpm."
That is exactly what I am talking about
Both out the box, as they come out the factory

Pieter
Also used to feel like that about reving a motor
However new motors are designed to different
They do more work at higher revs
For me it started with my one bike, govener was at 14500rpm
My current bike 12000rpm
Work done, measured in KW, is higher , if one can get a motor to be efficient at higher revs
Hence why a cam and heads, make more power at "higher revs"
This does not mean that I wish to get my V6 to rev
It does does not mean that, I would rev a diesel, beyond it limit
However, a lexus V8, is quite happy to be reversed and work at higher revs and have even its ear twisted

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
Thing with Yankee v8`s the things got killed by emission laws in the late 70`s. If we take the 302 Ford as an example
there was a variety of engines that ranges from 300kw to 150kw. SO comparing them in standard trim depends on which and what model you have.
We have a Lexus in the garage, I have a few friends with Lexus powered 4x4`s. They definitely does not have the low down grunt you find on 350 Chevy`s Ford 302`s in the trim most of the Yankee lovers run them.
Looking at all the tech that is in a Lexus it really lacks on the power and torque outputs.
Maybe it is because I am used to v8`s pushing not to bad figures. My 347 was build for 300kw and 600nm.
Here is an article that shows how well a 302 respond to mods.

Re: Lexus V8 conversion For Under 30k
So after so much noise and planing and running around and buying the Lexus V8, posting the Lexus V8 motor starting up on YouTube
When push came to shove, ended up not doing the conversion
Still have the Lexus V8 at home, and all the other parts
At that stage in life, was not in the mood to do all the work that it would of taken to do the conversion
So ended up rebuilding the Ford V6 3.4
Shocking that one of the reasons for not doing the Lexus V8 conversion was that the bakkie not stand for a long
Ironically, it took me 9 months to rebuild the V6
Yes did do a few other small things in between, and went on holiday twice in that 9 months
The porting of the cylinder heads took me a month of weekends
It already had a mild cam and exhaust on it, just that the motor was rotten and almost falling apart, to the point where a piston skirt broke
So pulled the V6 out, got new piston from Ford itself, at better prices then pirate parts
Used ARP bolts on the condors
AND ported the heads myself
The idea was to just get a few extra HP
The results have shocked me, it turned out (IMO) very well
Fuel consumption on the open road is better then what it was with the original 3.0 V6
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkaH6gvuAfk
It pulls great, the next video, was with about 3000km after the rebuild
Am not hamering the gears, just having fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gm0W3MaQBo
For the next trick, will be fitting Eri
Already have a Ford Sierra fuel injection manifold- complete
The surge tank and fuel pump that would of been used with the Lexus V8, will now be used on this setup
Also have the Dictator computer box
With other V8s at home, it's ok to have a V6
